Time to upgrade the 4x CDRW...what to buy?

Ok guys, the title says it all. I need a new CDRW as my 4x ZipCD just doesn't cut it anymore. After reading posts here and at the Hot Deals forum, I am a bit spooked about Lite-ons with all the problems and discrepancies between the "A" and "B" models. The price I like, the potential hassle I do not like.

I am fairly sure if I buy a Plextor 24x it will be a good, quality drive. A bit more pricey, as you know. Yamaha's also a bit pricey.

My question though lies with the "other brands". AOpen, Sony, Teac...any "other" brand you might recommend which might not hit my wallet quite as hard?

any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated. I trust you guys' real life experiences with these drives more than I do a site's recommendation. (with the exception of cdrinfo)

TIA. :)

I have a old panasonic 4x cd r also... I was looking at the plextor but rather have the scsi to free up my ide ports... I had bad experience with the yamaha scsi cdrw so I'm open to trying something else..

I was told that the plextor DAE ? or something wasn't as great... someone here will definitely know.. as I'm in the dame boat..

Both Plextor and Yamaha are very good. If you want to get a cheaper drive, get one with 8MB buffer.

Well I decided to take the plunge and ordered a Plextor 24x/10x/40x from MWave.

I just got an NEC 16x10x40, works amazing, buffer is always full, and no ruined disks. IMO, paying for a plextor just isn't worth it, there isn't much difference when it comes down to it.

Take a look over in Hot Deals. Circuit City, Best Buy and a few other places have the TDK 24x10x40 for ~$60.00 out the door. I have the TDK 12x10x32A and haven't had a problem or a coaster yet with it.

I already frequent the HD forums religiously. All the deals which came up either A) sold out by the time I could order or B) apply to stores which arent in my area. (BB, OD, OM)

I tried to get in on the circuit city TDK deal but no to avail. My local store and website both sold out. :frown:

Ah well, at least I have peace of mind that I bought a quality burner.

I find Teac to be the better choice over Lite-on and Plextor. The price is in between but the drive is well built. It doesn't have that cheap flimsy feel of the Lite-ons and the performance is excellent. DAE is also very fast and error-free. Plextor though, is premium : ) You made a good decision to go with Plextor. Guaranteed performance and quality.
