Curently I have a gtx 470 and I'm looking to upgrade. What would you do? I'm trying to stay around ~$250.00. sli 470 isn't an option cause they run hot.

If the options I have listed don't work for you or you have something better in mind, post it plz. I play BF3, Skyrim, D3, Crysis...

looking for the best bang/performance at my price level.

I voted GTX 660. But I don't think any of the cards in the poll is a real upgrade to a GTX 470. Other than a little better performance with much lower power draw.

I think you need at least a HD 7950/GTX 670 or better to really get higher performance VS your current GTX 470.

What resolution do you game at? for 1920x1080 that GTX 470 should do just fine for most games. In some games you have to lower the settings a little bit, but that is no big deal.

a HD 7870 is a nice upgrade over a GTX 470 plus it overclocks great

Yes, a 7870 is nice, but a 7950 would be nicer, and both overclock well. If you can't afford one now, just wait - I expect they'll be in your price range soon. Here's one on Newegg right now for $270AR.

7870 is a huge upgrade. It is like going from a 6870 to 7870 which is a significant leap. This is stock vs stock. But both oc well but 7870 definitely doesn't loose there either. Comparing max oc expect a 30-50%+ increase across the board if not more.

Think of it as going from a 6870 to gtx 580 such that neither is allowed to be oced to keep the diff same throughout. It is easily 50%-+ pretty often.

So, looks like the 7870 is the winner thus far. Looks like it's time to sell the GTX 470

Personally, I would wait for a deal on an HD7950 after-market versions such as Gigabyte Windforce 3x, MSI Twin Frozr or Sapphire Dual-X to dip to $250. I don't think HD7870 is a good enough upgrade and if you don't mind a slight overclock, at 1050mhz HD7950 ~ GTX680, which is great value once it dips to $250. This shouldn't be too long since it has already dipped to $280-290 in recent months. A good deal on a 7870 would be $190-200 by now.

I don't see a worth while $250 upgrade to what you have. I would wait until you have more money or until prices come down. Really, you won't be very impressed with any of the options you listed.

HD7870 will be a decent upgrade. But I would get HD7950 instead (although it costs a bit more), which can be overclocked to HD7970 level easily. Then it will be a real upgrade. Moreover there are numerous reports from users about the black screen problems about HD7850/7870 (Just google it. There are many forums concerning about this issue). You had better not risk getting into trouble.

Not saying it's the only thing that can cause it, but often it's when Afterburner is running. If you have the problem, try Sapphire's Trixx instead.
