Time to switch internet companies

I have been calling tech support for my current ISP (Suddenlink) for the past 2 weeks and I have had 2 technicians come out both did nothing. And finally today I found the problem. They are throttling connections, so after downloading constantly for 20-30 minutes you get capped for 10-30 minutes. Its a real pain in the ass for netflix streaming. So I think I am going to be switching to ATT Direct Elite (6.0mbps for $45/month). Does anyone have ATT and can vouch for netflix or any type of throttling?

Thanks! If you don't mind me asking where are you two located at? The current throttling is only happening in the local area.

They have all the lines in my area run for Uverse but the are not activating it for another 2 years.

AT&T does not throttle.

AT&T are still expanding Uverse, couldn't really tell you where to though, it's random but I don't work in the Uverse department

If you get a motorola modem or netopia modem you will be getting tech support from overseas.

How often do you anticipate having to call tech support for a problem specific to your modem? 😕

ATT is fine provided you never need customer service and they will probably bill you wrong everymonth

Funny, I've never had a problem w/ AT&T billing and their customer service is excellent on a number of occasions when I needed to call them on a hardware problem.

Funny, I'm switching from Suddenlink to AT&T DSL also. Just got the DSL modem today in fact (the Motorola 2210-02 that's free after $50 MIR from AT&T). I've heard it's supposed to be a good modem, sure is a tiny thing. About the size of my wallet but a bit thicker. My Elite 6mbps service gets turned on tomorrow but it's only $35 here in TX. I wonder why it's $10 less than your plan.

I've been happy with Suddenlink's service & support but my bill for cable tv & internet has gone up $6 in the past couple months. I'm just tired of the price creeping upwards. Been thinking of canceling cable tv for a while now anyway and this pushed me over the edge. They charge an extra $10/month for cable internet w/o tv so the hell with it, I'm ditching them.

If you get a Motorola modem, be prepared to either call tech support or do some basic/intermediate reconfiguring of your router.

The AT&T Motorola modems like to take 192.168.1.1 as their address, making your router unable to connect. You'll need to go into the router and set its default address to 192.168.2.1 or enable PPoE on the router and disable on the modem or set the modem to bridge.

My modem didn't take 1.1 but it was in the 192.168.1.xxx subnet. I just set my router to use 10.0.0.xxx and it worked pretty well.

i never had a problem with cell phone/internet but once I added tv it was a nightmare

my biggest gripe with the customer service was that i'd have to call in 5-6 times to actually get something done (sometimes while being on hold anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour. (for instance canceling my uverse service because I moved. they ended up charging me another month anyways) called 3 weeks ahead to make sure it was disconnected before the next billing cycle. even after they realized their error they didn't want to refund the tax for the extra month:| Then they refunded all but like forty two cents, which went past due because I had no clue about it. I've had a similar horrible experience with the ATT home entertainment. Was supposed to have movie packages free for 3 months (never had them) then they started charging me for them. Again they didn't want to refund tax even though no service had been provided. Basically anything promotional they have offered they ended up charging me for.

How do I setup a Motorola 2210 modem with a generic third-party router?

Yeah, I ran into the 192.168.1.1 problem, but I forgot that it only happens with certain routers. It's partly the modem's fault, but it's also partly the router's fault.

I think this has to do with the Airlink adapter drivers I installed, but for a period, my DL speed was being capped at 30-40 kbps on 768/384 ATT DSL on a wired connection.

after I uninstalled the Airlink drivers, I'm pretty sure the cap went away and my speed was topping at 140-150 kbps on a wired connection.

Well with all the problems I have had with suddenlink I am hoping I won't have to call in as many times with ATT but you never know.

The reason it is $10 cheaper is because I am getting the plan without a phone line. I have a cell phone and have no need for a land line.

Thanks! I might have to try this tomorrow. Now I just need to find a reliable method to test performance before and after. I'm guessing bandwidth won't change much, but maybe latency will...

I've had the AT&T elite DSL for about a year and it's pretty decent.

Obviously, not some 400 gbs cable connection, but I'm pleased with it. ($30/month)

I've basically had the same ISP for over 10 years. Dial-up then DSL with Pacbell, then SBC, now AT&T.

I've had very few problems over the years and can't justify leaving...yet.
