Time to replace my speaker?

I'm playing some music, and the right speaker goes on and off, whatever I track I play. The wiring are all ok, plugged at the right places. Grrr... Its an Altec Lansing. I have it for 3+ years now Do you think its time to replace it?

probably the wires or a solder joint is going bad. It's pretty hard to kill solid state devices if you don't abuse them. I have a receiver that is exactly one year younger than me and it still works great. I'm 22. . . .

try messing around with the 1/8 inch jack at the soundcard output while playing the music...if sound cuts in and out it could be a loose jack, and not a bad speaker.

How is a speaker solid state?

If the speaker itself is going then it will usually make noises that sound like you have a few paperclips in it or something to that affect.
Try hooking the right speaker to where the left hooks up and the other way around, and see what happens. Cutting out is usually another problem, like loose connections, even cleaning the connections may help.

But like OuterSquare said age is a factor but not a very big one with speakers, I know several big house sets that have survived for over 20 years.

sohcrates, it was indeed the jack. I've replaced the wire with a new one from my bf, and its working all fine now

Sorry, minus the actual speaker of course, I guess I was referring more to the amplifier portion.

At anyrate, I stand by my assertion that speakers don't die young if you don't abuse them.
