Time to replace my 1055T with Ivy Bridge?

So with D3 comming out I want to make sure I will be able to play with with max settings. I was thinking about getting a Ivy Bridge or maybe just the graphics card. I really don't want to do a full build (or my wife doesn't want me to do a full build). Do I even need to upgrade?

Any on adivce on what I should do?

Current setup:
Phenom 1055T AM3
Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H rev 2.0 (so no AM3+)
8 gb DD3 1600
Radeon 5870
60 gb SSD
1 tb hd

If there would be a game in the universe that would be unplayable at max settings with a 1055T (and I don't think there is), Diablo 3 most certainly won't be the one. Also, a 5870 is still a very powerful card. Get another one cheap and with crossfire you'll almost match the most powerful single cards you can get.

You could grab a HD7970 if that's within your budget. If not, I think that any member of the HD 7xxx family will suffice. You could wait a little and consider GTX 6xx.

As for the CPU, wait another generation.

5870 in CF would be marginally slower than a single 7970 (50fps in Metro 2033 v 60 fps) and much, much cheaper, since he only need one. I got one on Ebay for €150 recently.

I had no idea. 5870 is the better choice then, but the new tech might be helpful in some cases and newer games.

Probably only the additional VRAM (I think most if not all 5870ies have 1GB), and in the most demanding games. They are both DX11/SM 5.0 cards as far as I know, only the 7970 is almost exactly 2x more powerful.

I can verify that two 5870's in CF can run BF3 on ultra settings fluidly. I don't think there is anything more graphically demanding than BF3.

Metro 2033, Crysis 1 & 2. Also, my HD4890 seemed to have no problem running BF3 on ultra at 1680x1050 as well. Weird, it ran fluidly, and then I saw that this is actually a demanding game. I thought it was well optimized, but who knows.

Wait for the game to be released first, play it with your current setup and the decide if you need an upgrade.

Do you play BF3 MP or single ?? Im asking because my cousin had a Core 2 duo OCed with a HD4890. He couldn't play BF3 MP not even in Low quality. He then took a Core i5 2500K but again his HD4890 was bottlenecking the system and he couldn't get more than 45fps with High settings (not to mention all this in DX-10). Then he got a GTX560 Ti 1GB paired with the 2500K @ 3.6GHz and now the system hardly drops below 60fps even in large open 64 player maps. All that at 1080p High no AA.

An Oced 7970 beats 6950cf most of the times and often 6970cf as well. But no point of such a card without a SB

Overclock your X6 and 5870 and wait for Haswell.

That is what I am (kinda) doing. I almost jumped on the $200 2600K (actually, I kind of regret not doing it), but I really can't justify it. The 1055t is plenty fast for most things, and a 500mhz OC is practically guaranteed...

That being said, I'll consider Vishera too, as I expect it'll probably be released before Haswell...

What is vishera? Isn't pd amd's next? Even pd will be slower than SB tho and just might match nehalem or come close perhaps

The 1055T is a nice chip as is and upgrading BEFORE a game releases should never be done.

Your rig as it is have enough power to run lots of current games very well. Simply overclock if you're comfortable with it and you'll be a happy gamer for many months.

That's what I did with my X4 955. Stock it runs at 3.2GHz and I OCed it to 3.7GHz in under 1 minute, reboot included :p

Enjoy your chip and the extra $$ in your wallet.

Single 55ish, multi a bit slower (30-40 perhaps?). Donno, don't play it anymore :p

For bf3 ESP multiplayer ESP for min fps 2500k will be a HUGE upgrade even comparing stock and even more so once overclocked. Buying amd is pointless these days in 99% situations

was the score on the Phenom II. I haven't tested it on the i5.

From a pragmatic point of view, no need to buy AMD, Intel officially beat them in every category with better or, at least, more efficient chips. But if you want to support this roaring monopoly it is on your conscience :) (I took the bait and got the CPU I currently own, and I am aware of my "wrong-doing").

Even sub $75 amd has lost its charm. It makes sense only if you want graphics for very old games and need llano and can't spend the extra $20 for a better CPU plus discrete gpu combination or want a Lapy for such a job. I wonder how amd survives today :(

OP, there is NO reason for you to upgrade to IB to play D3. I have friends playing the beta with Phenom II Quad-Cores and GTX 460 cards at 1080P res with max details. You will be fine with your current setup.

Just wait till Haswell for the processor and maybe upgrade your video card to a GTX 660 or 670 when they come out later this year.

Piledriver is the core going into Trinity. According to completely unfounded rumors :)D) Vishera (next desktop CPU) will have Piledriver+ cores in them, plus L3, plus they'll fit into AM3+ motherboards...
