Time to get a new plan/service/contract

I've been on my fam's plan, but now I need to get my own.

Can I buy a used phone, and then just purchase a plan and get it activated through whoever I choose to go with? I have tried shopping online through T-Mobile, but can't find a way to get around buying a phone+plan.

If your getting a new contract wouldn't be just as cheap to get a new one? I am not familiar with T-mobile but with every provider I have dealt with it is cheaper to get one through them than it is ebaying one.

I'm pretty sure that most providers will make you sign a contract regardless if you have you own phone, unless you choose to go prepay. So if you have to sign a contract anyways, it's wrth it just to get a phone from Tmobile.
