The minimum wage law discriminates against people with low skills, many people dont have the skills required to justify getting paid the minimum wage and should be paid what they are worth

If the minimum wage is $7.25/hour but a person doesn't have the skills to justify those wages they cant get a job, there would be more jobs available without minimum wage

The government doesn't have a right to tell businesses how much they have to pay their employees. This is why I believe the minimum wage needs to be abolished, do you agree

I don't agree. It's bad enough living on the current minimum wage. Would really suck being paid 50 cent /hour. Hell why even work at all.. Just go on welfare.

No. The minimum wage sets a floor that limits how badly the rich can screw the poor.

Except people wouldn't automatically go to 50 cent/hour it would be based on supply and demand, there would be more jobs available

Considering that businesses have no problems hiring high school kids with no jobs skills I fail to see how this issue exists.

If anything, minimum wage for fortune 500 companies should be increased.

My cousin works at jack in the box, his girlfriend recently had a baby. Guess what, since jack in the box pays minimum wage, the mom and baby get welfare.

Why should our tax dollars supplement jack in the boxs benefits package?

Why not pay the employees a liveable wage and offer benefits? Because doing do would take money away from the ceo.

I disagree.

However much we might oppose minimum wage it is the least offensive, least destructive means of wealth redistribution. In a nutshell it's inflation, but it's under the premise that rich people won't increase their earnings as fast as the poor increase minimum wage.

Quite a fascinating arms race.

What minimum wages does NOT do is concentrate wealth and power in the hands of Washington DC. By god, if only this model were universal in our thinking. We need more solutions that don't involve centralized power. More means of avoiding tyranny from the elite ruling class.

If the choice is between this and taxes, why would you choose taxes?

Maybe he should have spent more time learning job skills and less time making babies?

When I was in Chicago, all the people at the fast food places were unable to speak proper english. So I must assume that only illegals were hired. So how does minimum wage support black people?

Friedman also advocated negative income tax (earned income tax credit). I suppose if you would rather prefer the government ensures that employees have enough to survive on, instead of the employer, you can support Friedman, eliminate minimum wage and replace it with earned income tax credits.

Why?

Because it is JACK IN THE BOX.

Maybe he should have started training for something more before he got his GF pregnant.

But know, he was thinking with the wrong head.

So upping the minimum wage for an absolutely crappy job? No.

The only change I would go for would be simple. Eliminate that lower minimum wage thing for tipped employees. We need to start getting back to where tips meant you were happy for the service, not because someone needed it to live off of.

Why is someone who is working at minimum wage having babies, this makes no sense at all and both are clearly unfit to take care of that baby

So the good pay is reserved for a certain few? Uh, no.

If a company can afford to pay a liveable wage, they should be required to do so.

How old are you? Because you must not have any life experience. Sometimes things happen.

My FIL worked his ass off as a legal immigrant. He still speaks very little English, but all of his kids are doing great.

You do not have to "ass"ume anything.

Jack in the Box, like most fast food restaurants, are franchised. So the individual stores arent really Fortune 500 companies. Some are owned by large corps others are mom and pop llcs.

That said, I am assuming this JiTB is in Jasper or around there. Where I live in Texas, many fast food workers get paid $9 starting out, and its not one of the urban cities. Hell 7 years ago I worked as a fast food cook in a smaller Texas city and I started out at $7.25. That was when the minimum wage was $5.15. No one where I worked received minimum wage, everyone started at $6.50 or higher.

The pay should be based on supply and demand, the government has no right to tell employers how much they can pay employees

Im old enough to know that you shouldn't be having a baby while working at minimum wage

$9 an hour is in no way a liveable wage.

Lets apply that philosophy of babies to employees. Do not hire employees until you can pay them a liveable wage.

Good pay is reserved for those with actual skills. Saying "Can I take your order" does not count as a skill.

And how would you define livable wage?

Babies dont just happen. They happen by making a series of choices. Sounds to me like his gf should have gotten an abortion.

I agree with all of the points made by the OP.

The minimum wage prevents a lot of people from working and it gets people laid off.

I hope that the Keynesians don't make any attempt to complement it with a maximum wage because the market (composed of rational agents, rather than the state) determines supply and demand as the OP pointed out.

What minimum wages does NOT do is concentrate wealth and power in the hands of Washington DC.
It requires spending on the department of labor and the pentagon to monitor it and enforce it.

Have you ever worked construction in a chemical plant? Helpers make something like $18 an hour, and that is low pay.

We are talking about people with no skills besides a pair of hands and being able to follow instructions.

If you have to education (due to being stuck in failed public schools because Obama cancelled the student voucher program, for example), the only way to move up in life is to work to get on the job experience. Unless you think the underprivileged are destined to be on perpetual welfare. Which is a pretty evil position to hold I should say.

So the good pay is reserved for a certain few? Uh, no.

Uh, yes. The good pay is reserved for those with the skills to generate what their pay is worth.
