Peace, Thanks for your patience!

Looks good to me... the audigy gamer bundle is a waste of cash imo. Make sure you have a CPU cooler, some thermal paste, and at leaste 2 case fans.

Which Thermalright heatsink? Which Tornado? What speed RAM?

There's absolutely no reason to get that heatsink unless you're overclocking a lot, but if you were overclocking, you would probably get a slower CPU to start with, and you most certainly don't want A-Data RAM if you're overclocking.

Are you planning on getting 5 more hard drives? I don't see where a PSU over 450W would ever be a benefit.

The system seems pretty silly to me. You're getting a high-end CPU/mobo/HDD/PSU/soundcard and then getting generic memory. You're getting a $400 video card that can play most games in 1600x1200, but talking about a budget 17" CRT that isn't even suitable for 1280x1024.

You're spending the most money on the part that will depreciate the fastest (video card) and saving money on the only part that will last 5+ years (monitor).

You should really be looking at high-end 19" CRT's, name-brand PC3200, and a 2nd HDD for storage (especially since you're going to burn DVD's).

a64 3000 is pretty slow compared to other a64 processors how low do you want him to go ?
more power on the PSU are better for overclocking that is a known fact somewhat...

Exactly what i was looking for tostada, someone to rip me up.

^_^

Ive been running a 1.4 intel dell for a few years now and its time for a change, its built out of things people have suggested here on AAT.

Im probably not going to be oc'ing it anytime soon, seeing as it will just be nice running 80x as fast.

Suggestions for RAM? Quiet a few people suggested A-data

Ill look to tone down the psu to 400-450 range.

And like i said, I really have no clue whats what in terms of monitor brands these days...or ever...

Keep it coming.

PS -- RAM Speed for the adata was pc3200

Thermalright CPU Cooler for AMD Athlon XP Palamino, Thoroughbred, and Barton 2800+ and up (Heat Sink Only) for the heatsink

Vantec "Tornado" Double Ball Bearing Cooling Fan

Obviously you must have enough power for the system, but if you've already got 400W, the most important part is the quality of the PSU. You really wouldn't even need 400W with a good Antec or Enermax PSU, but I'd get a 420W Enermax Noisetaker or a 450W Antec just for the future.

If you're not going to o/c really far, I would certainly recommend $220 for OCZ PC3500 CL2.5 instead of $329 for PC3700 CL3. That one even says he's running at CL 2-2-2 with 200MHz FSB ... Really nice if you're not overclocking.

That heatsink is definitely good for the hardcore overclocker, but you might want to look at the Silent Boost K8, which is an excellent deal for a quiet heatsink that's still highly recommended for overclocking.

The 19" ViewSonic CRT's are a good place to start. If you want a nice aperture grille screen, NEC SuperBright Diamondtron screens are very good. That $529 BenQ 19" LCD also has a lot of people abandoning their CRT.

And for $80 you might want to look at the dual-layer NEC 2510A burner.

Are you going to get some ridiculously expensive speakers? I'd check out the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz if you're not going to be turning the machine into a home theater.

I didn't mean to rip you up... Nothing you listed is bad. Even cheap memory is OK when you've got a place like NewEgg that won't give you trouble if it's unstable or DOA. I was just thinking your priorities were a little off, but then again I'm the kind of guy that would usually spend half my budget on a pretty monitor.

That's why people usually give their budget when they're asking about a system, so people can recommend a good balance.

well including monitor, not looking to spend more then about... $2500

I already have some beauty klipsch speakers... got them last year for $300, dont remember the design at the moment...alienware has a bunch of pictures of em :-\

Here is what's currently in my cart right now, once I find a x800 instock...I'll start ordering. Anything else I'm missing?

I said I have an xp cd...all it really is, is a friends backup, dell xp cd [Should I just get a new one???]

AMD 3000+ [CPU]
K8N Neo Platinum [MOBO]
ATI RADEON X800 PRO [Video Card] ==========
420w ENERMAX Noisetaker [PSU]
2x 512 OCZ Performance Series [RAM]
NU TECH 8x [CD/DVD]

GeIL High Performance Copper Thermal Compound [5 pack]

Found x800 pro's instock at compusa.... going to go ahead and start ordering tomorrow morning.

looks good to me. Have fun!

EDIT: missed that top part. You'll need a new XP cd. Dell XP CDs are set up so they will only install on a Dell PC. A Dell XP disk will not install on your pc.

It appears you care about noise. If that is the case, then you might want to consider the Antec P160 case. It uses a 120mm fan for reduced noise. It's aluminum and kinda spiffy looking too. In addition, it is going to be cheaper than the Lian Li case. Don't get me wrong; I think the case you have chosen is excellent. I just thought I would offer another idea.

Also, I don't think you need another case fan. You aren't overclocking, and the case comes with 3 fans stock. That is overkill already. Granted, more cooling is better than less, but that is just added noise.

Now that looks like a pretty amazing system.

Hans5849:

Yeah, I think I'd get the NEC 2510A. I love the Zalman 7000 heatsink, but it's bigger, more of a hassle to install and costs $10 more, and you'd absolutely never notice the difference in a case that has a Vantec Tornado 80mm. The Zalman says it's 20dB and the Silent Boost says it's 21dB. I think it may be a tiny bit more of a difference than that, but the fact is that they're both nearly silent.

That Tornado 80mm is a double-ball fan listed at 55.2dB. With the fan controller, you can keep it from sounding like you have a jet engine in the case, but it will still be much too loud to nit-pick about heatsinks noise.

If you want to try and have an extremely quiet system, you could pick up a pair of 14dB fans, and then you wouldn't hear anything but that Radeon (which is actually supposed to be pretty quiet).

Oh, and what's the word on that Geil thermal grease? Are there people who would recommend that over Arctic Silver 5?

i'm sorry but i have to disagree on the thermaltake silent boost.

The heatsink is much bigger then thermalrights and does not cool as well. The fan on it is a old model of a panaflo and it is not a good model either. at 12V it is not silent at all and at 5V it clicks and makes a weird wrrr noise alot.

Here is a link
http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=5844&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=thermaltake+boost&start=0

I do have first hand use of it and i think it is total crap
some people are happy with it but in my room at night it was not quiet enough to let me sleep.

Ralf, a main writer for SPCR, has two models and gave both of them thumbs down.

There is a reason no thermatake product is on any recommend list at SPCR.

just my two cents

The Silent Boost K8 is a good deal. If it's loud or makes a clicking noise, the person should've RMA'd it. I don't see anybody disputing that it's a good heatsink with a good quiet Panaflo fan.

The thread you linked to is full of people who love that heatsink! I see comments like "Best heatsink I ever owned."

I have royally confused myself. The artic coolers must of become sold out after i added 2 to my cart, so it decided to empty itself for me [thougtful eh?..arr!!] i added everything again, and its over $200 cheaper, i've compared the list i posted on here, and the list i have for myself, its the right stuff, same as before....just cheaper -- has that happened to anyone else?
