Well, after 4 years its time to build a new comp. I have a list of stuff going but can't decide on a few things and need some help finalizing my choices. This will be a gaming computer that I hope will last for 2+ years. I will probably overclock to 3.6ghz, don't really want to push it too hard since I was never comfortable tweaking voltages, so if I can get to 3.6 with a minor increase in voltage or preferably none at all, that would be great.

Here is my WishList from newegg that has a few extra parts for convenience and comparison.

Thing's I have already,
-OCZ GamexStream 600W Power Supply. Because it was only 99 bucks at the time with a $30 mail in rebate on top of that
-Audigy 2 ZS Reusing
-320GB storage drive that I got 3 months ago and now 500 GB are at the price I paid for 320 : / So I will probably change this to main drive and get 2 500GB for storage.

Things I need
-CPU. Was just going to choose the E8400 untill I saw that the E8500 went down from 269 to 209. not sure if the E8500 is $30 better than the E8400, but the price is close enough that I'm undecided
-Motherboard. Was set on a DS3R Gigabyte board untill I read something about people having problems with gigabyte boards. So now it is between the DFI BloodIron P35-T2RL or the ASUS P5Q P45. Never owned a DFI board before so I don't know how good they are or how good their support is.
-Memory. either 5-5-5-15 DDR 1066 or 4-4-4-12 DDR 800. Like I said, I will be overclocking a little but will the 1066 actually benefit me. The P5Q shows the memory standard as 1200, so would it run slower with DDR 800 compared to DDR 1066, or would the different memory speeds not even be noticable? this is where I am most undecided.
-Video. Pretty much dead set on the Visiontek HD4870. My max resolution is 1600 x 1200, so I won't be doing any uber high resolution gaming. I will probably play at 1280 x 1024 most of the time unless I find out that I can actually play at 1600 x 1200(for some reason... I am afraid of playing stuff at 1600 x 1200 for fear of being disapointed with crappy frame rates : / ) and I do plan on playing the upcoming games(far cry 2, fallout 3, alan wake, ect.)
-DVD burner. lite-on iHAS220-08
-Cooler. Freezer 7 Pro

So, that's it unless I missed something. And, this is kind of short notice as I want to order everything tomorrow morning(7/22), so that hopefully I get everything by thursday, friday at the very latest.. sucks waiting for parts over the weekend. And as for my budget, I have $1,000 to spend.

I'd go with the E8500 and DDR2-1066 RAM myself, but I don't OC really that much. I'd also go with the Asus P5Q board over the DFI, Asus boards are top notch and I had a bad experience with one of the DFI Lanparty boards a few years back. Worth piece of junk.

First, I'll answer your RAM question since that actually could influence your CPU decision. Faster RAM does nothing for you in the real world except provide overclocking headroom. You're only looking to get to 3.6GHz, which DDR2-800 can do just fine. As long as you're sure that you're not going past 3.6GHz, I'd recommend DDR2-800. If you think you may want to go beyond that someday I'd get DDR2-1000, which is fast enough to max out your overclock, but less expensive than DDR2-1066.

As far as the CPU, I'd stick to the E8400. Save your $30 since you'd be overclocking either one of them to 3.6GHz anyway.

Hard Drives: The Seagate 7200.10s are a generation old. Seagate's newest drives are the 7200.11 series. If you're going to buy a Seagate drive I would get one of the newer ones, but I'd also look at Western Digital's 640GB Caviar.

The 4870 will be more than enough for 1600x1200.

DFI boards are the best in the business, IMO. I have had DFI since the athlon xp days and are always released later because DFI likes to get every last percent out of their boards whether it is for over clocking or overall throughput speed. As long as you are not o/cing a quad, that blood iron will be awesome!

Here'd be what I buy for myself:
CPU: Q9300 (OC it to about 3.5) or E8400 OC to 4Ghz.
m.b. P35/P45/P43 all good, generally Gigabyte is decent.
RAM: Gskill DDR2-1000 2x2gb kit is by far the best now.
g-card: 4850 or 4870, best in each of its price category now.
HSF: ACF7 pro is bit weak for the OC I have in mind, probably I'd go for Xigmatec S2813 or Vendetta 2.

I like your list nevertheless, except the ACF7 pro I'd replace. It's way too expensive for the money. Xigmatec is the one to get. The muskins not bad either. FOr the m.b. just check that it can be overcloked that's all. most p35 does do 450FSB+ so no problem.

quadcore is definitely the wave of the future, dual core is the wave of now.

nyker gives a good recommendation. P45 will provide you with a few new gizmos than P35. Stability is about the same.

ok, so the E8500 went down another 10 bucks so I think I will just get that. I think I will also go with the ASUS P5Q. I changed my RAM to the G. Skill DDR2 1000 @ $84.99 and I also changed my hard drives to the new 7200.11, I like seagate because of the 5 year warranty. I was going to wait until tomorrow to order everything, but I think I am all set and will just order it now. Thanks for the help!

The price is going down on the E8400-8500 because stepping E0 is coming and the E8600
which can clock to 5.0 on air and at xtreme 6.1-6.4 gigs using sub temps
-http://en.hardspell.com/doc/showcont.asp?news_id=3616 , on air

-also it seems some E8500 can be found with E0 but you have to Google for the id ,saw it on a German site , but did not mark it , so they could be clearing out old C0's
-I'am waiting for the E8600 E0 myself.
