I still think we could make do with only 20 or so forums.

The problem is that it seems so easy to add forums, but I can't recall the last time (if ever) any were consolidated. I presume AT in 2017 will just be a big mess of forums with a single thread in each. 😀

EDIT: make that 20 forums with 4 subforums. Less of a mess than the 40 forums we have now. AnandTech doesn't need to be all things to all people, and the whole point of "Off Topic" is that it is (or should be) a catchall for whatever doesn't fit in the technical forums. Having a billion forums makes it harder to have active forums because few users will check so many forums even if they are interested in them.

We need a gossip subsection where we're allowed to make member callout threads and discuss bannings. Forum drama is wonderful.
 
We need a cat forum. Lets keep all those wierdos and their billlions of cat pictures in one place
 
Oh oh, I know, a bronies (or perhaps anime, furries, weird pillows) forum. Keep them all contained in one place.
 
We need a new forum of which I am the moderator. It doesn't matter what the subject matter is. Just make me a moderator and great things will happen.

These forums definitely need to be trimmed down a bit. Some of my opinions:
-Overclocking should be its own forum. That would be for all types of overclocking.
-Almost all of the other hardware forums should be combined. CPU, mobo, video, storage, PSU, cases, notebooks, peripherals, computer help, and HTPC should be merged into General Hardware.
-Cooling should be grouped with Overclocking since the only people who care about cooling are overclockers.
-Consumer electronics subforums can all be merged into 1 forum called Consumer Electronics
-Software for Windows should be renamed General Software because lots of software like VLC is not specific to one OS.
-Apple and Linux should be merged into the Operating Systems forum.
-PC Gaming and Console Gaming should be merged into a forum called Gaming
-Security can probably be merged into General Software
-Off Topic should also cover news since it already does cover news.
-The politics side of P&N can be moved to Discussion Club
-Create a new forum called Gun Nuts
-Most of the Merchandise and Shopping forums can be combined into a single forum. Black Friday 2012 was months ago.

Why I like the current setup -

It is easier for us to police this way.

I know who is being an attention whore, because they post a topic that is obviously for one of the "slower" forums in ATOT.

Most of the forums have moderators with expertise in that particular area. Making it easier for them to scan threads and help others.

I find the format here, easier to navigate than many other places. Perhaps because I spend the bulk of my time here? Whatever the reason, most other forums seem clunky and/or chaotic.
