Time Magazine does it again...

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.time.com/time/magazine/current">US: The Case For Teaching The Bible - Rest of world: The Truth About Talibanistan
(Afghanistan)</a>

Guess Time thinks Americans can't handle the truth about the current situation in Afghanistan or something...

Or they think that the rest of the world can't handle the truth about the bible...

Anyways, I have seen this issue come up a few times, but I really don't think that there is anything to it. I think its more marketing than anything else.

or they think they'll sell more copies of what is the same magazine inside that way. which is the most likely reason.

Because they can't. The rest of the world can deal with unpleasant news. Americans start bitching and moaning about bias, call Time unpatriotic, etc.

The other industrialized nations have moved past myths and fairy tales and thus are not interested.

why should we be surprised? the covers are an excellent mark of the differences between the U.S. and the rest of the (civilised) world...

The Bible is only a collection of books. Some of them or no more than some letters sent back and forth between religious leaders like Paul to the Corinthians. You could study the Bible in many different ways. In history class we studied the Quoran/Koran (Spell). You can look at it as a literary form, you can look at it from a historical perspective, you can look at it as a way to study Christians and even Islamic people. Abraham was the father of both the Jews and Islamic people who claim Abraham was a prophet and the Father of many people.

When I look at history, the Bible and the study of the Bible People covers an awful lot of ground from King Xerxes to Egyptians, to Syrians, to Babylon, symerians, greeks, romans, etc. In history people are affected by what they believed or their leaders believed. So a study of religious texts can be somewhat useful.

On the other hand the Bible is awful large to get through in a year. That is an awful lot of information to get through. Just looking at selected sections you could get a pretty good overview.

It is just a book. It doesnt bite. If you can force a religious person to take a class in evolution then maybe everyone should have to take a couple religion courses. Turnaround is fair play.

What harm is there in reading a book?

I would consider the Bible to be an adult only book. It is full of murder, and who slept with who and who begat who. Clinton compared himself to King David. How can you understand what he is talking about if you never read it?

The Bible would make a very difficult book to study. The context it was written in makes some of the sayings in the bible hard to understand. For instance there is this saying Christ says that goes like this "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to get to Heaven" (Paraprhased). The eye of the needle refers to a gate in the wall of jerusalem just tall enough for a person to walk through. The point is the camel had to be unloaded, the goods carried to the other side, and then the camel has to kneel and crawl through the eye of the needle. You cant just read the Bible and know what the heck the saying means. You have to have the historical perspective to understand what it means. All of this is just the information in one little verse. Imagine now that you need to read 1,500 pages of that in tiny text. It might be closer to 2,000 pages, I am just guessing. It depends on the foot notes and the size of the text.

Being a successful publication and being an intelligent publication in this country are two very different things.

so, why do we care???

i don't think the rest of the world cares about religion being taught in US public schools.

This happens a lot will BBC world too. When i was away (Africa) watching BBC World via satellite, many of the programs had the notice "Not in North America." Most of them were issues regarding Iraq and ME. They were actually pretty good too.

the article on afghan/Pakistan is still there.... not like they took it out or anything and replaced it with the bible article.. i guess Time felt more people could relate to bible teaching than whats going on outside of the states

nevertheless, the afghan/Pakistan article was a good read....

It's Time magazine people! You might as well get upset about The Enquirer (magazine) having an article about Gore making love to an alien. Let's face it: Time is just a half-step away from being the Enquirer.

Actually when WIRED mag published no heaven no hell just science, it was the biggest sell out issue they ever had. Maybe Time is jumping on the band wagon?

Sounds like a boring read to me. Tho, I'll probably briefly read it in the book store. Interesting to say the least.

But not 20 ft. away sat a blond atheist who asked that her name not be used because she hasn't outed herself to her parents. Why take a Bible class? I asked her. "Some of my friends are Christian," she said, shrugging, "and they would argue about, like, whether you can be a Christian and believe in evolution, and I'm like, Okaaaay ... clueless." Williams signed up for a similar reason. "If somebody is going to carry on a sophisticated conversation with me, I would rather know what they're talking about than look like a moron or fight my way through it," she says. The class has "gotten a lot of positive feedback," she adds. "It's going to really rise in popularity."

That made me LOL
