My Time Machine drive is a USB drive plugged into my Mini. My wife's and my MacBooks access the Time Machine drive via our home network.

I have two files on my Time Machine drive (names changed):

"MotionMan's MacBook_002500a5a456.sparsebundle"
"Mrs. MotionMan's MacBook_002500a5a456.sparsebundle"

And one folder named "Backups.backupdb"

In THAT folder I have two folders (names changed):

"MotionMan's Desktop G5"
"MotionMan's Mini"

(I no longer have the G5.)

Inside THOSE folders are multiple folders like "2009-07-26-101015". The last one in the G5 folder is "2009-06-17-054234".

Inside the Mini folder are folders named "MotionMan's Mini HD" with copies of the Mini's HD in them.

A couple questions:

1. I assume I can get rid of the G5 folder altogether. Can I just delete it or is there a procedure I need to follow?

2. Why are the backups of the MacBooks different that the one of the Mini? Is it because the Mini is local and the MacBooks are on the network?

Thanks.

1: You can get rid of it, just deleting should be fine.
2: Just as you surmise, one is local and the others are networked.

Also, you can use Disk Utility to dynamically repartition the drive.

Wait, you can specify network drives for time machine backups? I thought that was only doable with a Time Capsule or external plugged into an Airport Extreme?

Does the filesystem matter?

Nah, it can be over network shares as well, the only finicky issue is you might have to create the sparse bundles yourself, and then they're fairly easy to create..

ComputerName_macaddress.sparsebundle (created with Disk Utility)

A few guys at work have one of these setup:
http://www.kremalicious.com/20...d-time-machine-volume/

Couple hundred dollars and it'd be a good setup...

Not sure about the file system though.. I think you'd need to setup NTFS-3G or something for NTFS shares.
