So I'm considering upgrading to Office 2011. If there is an issue after install, and i did a time machine backup before that point, I will be able to restore the entire system to that point right?

Possibly. Or you could just use AppCleaner to delete Office 2011.

A CarbonCopyCloner clone/SuperDuper clone done just before install would accomplish this purpose.

I don't really use Time Machine, so I have no idea if you can use it for that purpose.

Yes, you can do a complete restore from time machine. I did this once and it is slow as molasses. You will need to boot from your OSX DVD, there should be an option in the utilities menu.

Agreed. Nothing in Office 2011 that should screw up your system, unless you're pirating and worried about a virus. ;)

I'll echo what SSWilson said.. Time Machine will work, but it is S-L-O-W. Depending on your HDD size, you're going to want to give yourself quite a long period of time for the restore.

I think Office 2011 officially comes out in October. I've read that the volume license version is out already so you may want to check with your employer.

yes the business version - not the version with sharepoint - is out I heard from a little birdy - but make sure you have permission to use the keys because they have some OGA going on now ;)
