How long does a poster have to edit a post before the "edited" tag appears in the bottom part of the post?

I ask because a poster is abusing this by repeatedly posting actionable material in a quick exchange but editing it before the "edit" tag comes up.

If I recall correctly it's about 2 minutes. If you feel someone is abusing this, please make a thread in Moderator Discussions with particulars so we can look into it.

Thanks. Are there edits that mods can see that others can't? I don't want to bother complaining if it's not something that can be proved.

Not until post has been archived via database backup.

The only other way to prove would be to capture a screenshot or quote it.

However, it is what ends up being recorded is what counts. If a member posts and then changes the post to something else, what difference does it make.

If it was changed afterwards, you have the timestamp to indicate.

How long does that take? Does that mean the original versions will always be available to mods even if there is nothing about an edit in the sig?

The problem is that the post will be up on your browser and the post will be edit it while you are reading it. When you go to quote it, the new text will be quoted. Yes, you could quote what's on your browser but you could fake any type of quote that way, no? I admit, it is risky for the poster to assume he won't be quoted before he edits it.

When they intentionally post something that would likely violate the rules or a personal attack and then change it later. (Childish, but I've seen it happen a couple times now with the same poster.) This is only really an issue in rapid exchanges where both parties are refreshing very frequently. It's a pretty rare problem.

You have less than 2 minutes to save edits before they are tagged as edits
Only after 24 hours can the mods go back and get a copy from the time it was archived; not the original unedited post.

Once you see the post and hit the quote button, a permanent copy of what you see on your screen is what goes into the quote. The quote does not refresh

It can become a one persons word against the other, but the Moderators will usually look at what seems for feasible. Track records can come into play.

I just thought i would add i have seen this happen as well and its very annoying. IMO there should be ZERO time available to edit posts and one they are posted a timestamp saying edited should always appear regardless of if its edited within seconds of the original post.
