Not many air tools used, even when he was messing w/ the tires. Pretty cool. I would like to do something like that, except it wouldn't be a mid engine nightmare.

Probably got most of them started by hand and used air(if he even had it) after-wards.

I've always wanted to rebuild an engine. Just never had the money, space, or tools to do so. :\

You don't use air tools to build engines. And the few accessories here and there don't take much to do by hand.

true, didn't think about that when I wrote that. Could for some of the other things though.

wouldn't air tools be bad because they cannot be torqued to a specific value neither accurately or consistently?

I was referring to when he was changing the tire on the front, he was using a the 4-way tire iron. Just thought it would save them time. Plus like engine mounts & tranny mounts I would think you would use an impact to secure them to the car. I understand that you'd use the torque wrench to then torque to spec.

All the internal work is done by hand since it all has to be torqued to spec, this I understand.

In the grand scheme of things, rebuilding and reinstalling an engine in a MR2...

Let's just say he's got plenty of time and isn't worried about saving a few seconds using hand tools vs air tools.

Plus you're back to spending thousands of dollars on tools to save you a few minutes on something you're only going to do out of your home garage once or twice a decade.

That was wicked cool. I liked the Doors w/Snoop Dog rapping. Good choice of music.

Yeah, most people don't bother to get an air compressor and air ratchet unless they're going to use it for more than just working on their car. I do a lot of work on my cars myself and while there have been a couple of times when having the air gun would have been very nice, it just hasn't been worth getting one. They're bulky, the compressors take up a lot of room and you've got to get them all rigged up to use them. For 95% of the stuck bolts out there a normal ratchet with a breaker bar or a piece of pipe to extend the handle will work.

And if you think I'm full of shit, I did do an engine swap on my 1966 AMC Rambler with nothing but hand tools. 232 inline 6 for a 287 V8.

My question is this: Why does the guy build 1/2 the engine wearing pajamas?

Probably for the same reason I build/repair computers for people in my underwear in my free-time.

Why not? It's usually what I'm wearing when I get the time to be a nerd!

Awesome video. Every engine should have at least one of these made for it.

I believe it's from the Need For Speed: Underground 2 soundtrack. It's a great song.

Edit: Man that video makes me want a project car something fierce. Not a mid-engined nightmare, though. Something like an older Datsun Z car, or another Accord or a 200SX

Thanks for the comments guys...didn't see this thread until now. I'm tdc7 on youtube and the black and red MR2 in the video are mine. Red one is a 93 hardtop with JDM gen 2 3s-ge (high compression motor minus the turbo, 165hp @ crank)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiQ_aQIeIds

Not sure why he calls it a 5S-GTE, that's clearly a 3S block (water jacket gives it away). Only thing 5S it has is the crank.

You must be "DaleRider1954". The block is a 5s block...look at the oil cooler lines. Pistons are 87.5mm Wisecos, and the maximum bore on a 3s block is 87.0mm.

Didn't use any air tools whatsoever...you'll notice that there isn't even an air compressor in my garage :\
