Congo rebels have been accused of cannibalism during more than a week of tribal fighting that killed scores and forced thousands to flee.

Church leaders and residents in Bunia, the capital of the Ituri district, said that Lendu tribal fighters killed civilians and combatants, cutting open their chests and ripping out hearts, livers and lungs

Going to have to brush up on Congo politics now...

You don't suppose the French are involved in the Congo mess, do you?

Don't get me started. There's already a few threads on the war in the Dem Rep of Congo in this forum. Have a quick search to see what people are saying.

Cheers,

Andy

Oh, but Iraq, where there were no WMD, and there was no nuclear program, and the link to domestic terrorism was dubious at best...that was something we should handle.

If we're going to save the downtrodden of the world, I'm all for it. Just start "helping" in places that aren't going to give you poll numbers, like Congo.

Yeah and the French might just come up with some great recipes for them just before surrendering!

The UN is in the Congo, have been for years, currently they have just over 5,000 troops there. Even being there for years they still underwent looting recently they were unable to control, including their own buildings. The UN is going to ask the security council for more troops, and some UN members have asked France to lead the way. This is one of their former republics. However, the French have been there recently as well, attempting to act as mediators in the conflict. The end result of their brilliant ability at international diplomacy left both groups angry at each other, and the French, at least they now have one commmon ground, their hatred of the French. The "rebels" there have already stated any French troops will be seen as the enemy on the field, so this could get very interesting.

The US should back the efforts for a continued and increased UN military presence there until peace and stability are obtained. We should also throw our direct support behind the French in leading this effort, showing we can forgive and forget, and that we feel they deserve a major role in international affairs. Ok, I just want to see them fvck up again over there,....

I hardly call terrorist training camps dubious, especially when their location and "course of study" was laid out to the UN. Remember, powell claimed it was there to teach WMD use, what did we find there after we killed all the al-qaida guarding the camp? Recipes for WMD and dispersion manuals.

What about the mobile biological labs powell submitted accurate drawings of to the UN? Those are only capable of producing tons of anthrax or botulism every month.

BTW they have searched just over 110 sites out of almost 2,000 which I will readily agree with you is BS, I will give them time, but they better make a better effort than they have so far.

The French are the Rodney Dangerfield of the international community, they seem to have the ability to fvsk things up & require help to clean up their mess:D

Personally, I've been frustrated @ the lack of coverage of what's going on in the Congo, NPR commented recently that it's very expensive to maintain foreign correspondents & the area is so labile, that no major news agencies are providing coverage.

I'm also concerned that the sides in the conflict will view all outside intervention as a common enemy, and there aren't any good solutions to the problem(s).

They dont sponsor US terrorism (Afghanistan) and they dont have oil(Iraq) now I'm not saying the only reason we went to war with Iraq was oil but its the only reason why we went after Saddam's regime versuses anyone else's becuase that region has something to offer us.

If I hear the freaking Congo doesn't have oil one more time...

I worked for Chevron Geosciences in the late 70's & early 80's we had crews all over Africa...

CIA World Fact Book

Exports:
$2.6 billion f.o.b. (2001) 90% Petrolium

Geography IQ
ECONOMY
The Congo's economy is based primarily on its growing petroleum sector, which is by far the country's major revenue earner. The Congolese oil sector is dominated by the French parastatal oil company Elf-Aquitaine, which accounts for 70% of the country's annual oil production. In second position is the Italian oil firm Agip. Chevron, CMS Nomeko, and Exxon are among the American companies active in petroleum exploration or production. Following recent discoveries and oil fields currently under development, Congo's oil production is expected to continue to rise significantly in the next few years.

never let the facts get in the way of what you want to believe....

France had a 75 year oil relationship with Iraq, their longest standing and most exclusive customer.

Unlike the congo, which is one of France's colonies we are still dealing with today.

Vietnam, Haiti, Congo, what a bunch a fvcknuts....

France imports ~1/3 of the oil we do from the Congo, but they (Congo) import 42% of all imports from France...

Don't know if these figures are current, post war figures though.

The first link Piablemoose posted is about the fighting in the Ituri province in the Democratic Republic Congo (former Zaire and a former Belgian colony) and not in the neigbouring Republic Congo (or congo-brazzaville, the former french colony).

Piablemoose -- you are mixing two countries --- HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH

and Alistair7 -- in your pathetic attempt to bash the french you look like the biggest dork EVAR

It's OK man, I wouldn't have known the difference either. My media doesn't report on them.

We shoudl just drop leaflets over there letting everyone know that it's the 21st century and we have modern things like microwaves, computers, and... civilization. *GASP*

Ridiculous.

So there's the French Connection and the reason they've commited troops to restore DRC's ecomonic viability. France in no way shape or form is any better than any other country when it comes to "vital/strategic national interests". *CONFIRMED*

When you discuss something, do a bit of research and don't mix up 2 different countries. In a pathetic attempt to bash the french you don't even know the countries you are talking about.

At least Piablemoose admits his mistake and I congragulate him for that.

sorry, with both sides troops and refugees crossing the borders, it's hard to tell anymore.

It doesn't change the effect France had as mediators, nor the position their troops will be seen as enemies on the battlefield, even as a UN force. Should we be suprised another one of France's former colonies is still having problems? Look at Haiti...
