Time for some tire shopping

My Mazda 3 is needing some new tires. I'm looking at Kumho's and Dunlop's at the moment.

Where is your favorite place to buy online or B&M?

Tirerack or competing places on the net. You can get them really cheap.

tirerack. discount tire. that's pretty much it.

even when i worked at firestone, tirerack's prices were close to wholesale. independents who buy from tire warehouses pay even more. unless you can catch a good sale, i'd just buy them online and take them to a reputable shop. they'll probably charge you anywhere from $40-80, probably throw in a disposal fee for the old tires. be sure to price that in with the tires, no matter where you buy them. you'll probably get a cheaper install if you buy locally.

i've heard sam's and costco have competitive prices on tires and installation, probably check with them first.

Try taking the tire rack price to sears or discount tire and pricematching, often times they'll do it and you can get away with not paying for shipping

You can try costco, while tirerack may have cheaper tires, it won't pay for the cost of mounting them which in some cases can be as much as the tires themselves.

Har har. I was going to mention that one should calculate the cost of mounting the tires + the discounted tires you buy vs. buying the tires at Costco and them giving you a free mount.

Just don't go to Sam's club. I had the morons there forget to tighten the lugnuts on one wheel. I only got a block or two away before I turned around. It would thump whenever I went around a hard turn. Even with that short drive the studs had damaged the lug nut holes on the aluminum rim and I needed to replace it.

Yesterday I called Sears, Costco, and my local dealer and they all were at least $100 more than TireRack + shipping + Mounting at one of TireRack's "Price Pledge" Installers.

Anyone dealt with www.onlinetires.com? They seem to be about $50 cheaper than TireRack for the tires I'm looking at.

If they match tirerack's price they will match their price INCLUDING shipping which is generally only $30-$40 for 4 tires.

Costco is good but the one caveat is they will only mount stock size tires.

Most placed will pricematch tirerack+shipping though and usually you'll end up with a better price on mounting. I think last time I paid $80 to mount/balance 4 18" low-profile tires at a reputable shop. One big savings will be tax. 9.75% on an $800 set of tires is not a trivial amount IMHO.

I ordered some tires and called to set up my mounting/lifetime balance/lifetime rotation, $68+ tax. Sounds like you're not very lucky.

In my area, they usually charge $32 a tire. The only time I've been able to get them to mount for less than that is through quite a bit of haggling. I'm sure you'd consider that sort of haggling "normal" but there is nothing NORMAL about charging customers $32 per tire for dismount, mount and balancing unless you so happen to live in my area. I think anything more than $5 a tire is a ripoff but since I don't own the equipment, they call the shots!
