Razed in Black might be something you like. They tend to go gothy though but still like their sound.

I really like OSI, which is a prog metal/tech/spacey project by the original keyboardist from Dream Theater.

Here's a clip of a short, sweet, and super badass rockin song they did.

Lots of amazing and detailed editing. Sounds sick in headphones. Psychoacoustic techniques in full effect.

A lot of people say that, but I quite enjoy Come Clarity. I do agree that In Flames has been going downhill as they age, though.

Come Clarity is packed with real duds like 'Scream' and 'Leeches' as well as the title track. Really brings the album down hard.

I didn't enjoy it as much as their earlier work, but I actually quite enjoyed Leeches. Everything after that album though was just kinda meh.

If you like Mastodon, you'll probably like Baroness and maybe Kylesa by association.

For good, accessible and melodic thrash like Metallica and Megadeth, check out Metal Church's first two albums, Annihilator's Alice in Hell, Forbidden's Twisted Into Form, Artillery's By Inheritance, and Realm's Endless War.

For something along the lines of Pantera, try Exhorder and Invocator's Weave the Apocalypse (think a technical/progressive Pantera).

For favorites of mine in general, Fates Warning is my favorite band (I love everything from their early Maiden-y stuff to their flashier progressive period to their more minimal and dark later stuff). Psychotic Waltz and Watchtower are also two of my favorites, also early progressive metal pioneers, the former with a bit of a psychedelic vibe and the latter on the hyper-technical side of things.

Fear of God's Within the Veil is a really good album and is worth hearing if you want something dark. The closest description I could give would be Alice in Chains playing Slayer riffs with rather harsh female vocals. Sort of a grungy thrash metal, but they pulled it off excellently.

If you want "darker" you either go doom metal or black metal. skip the metalpop melodeath stuff.

Triumph recommended Immortal, I'll second that. Immortal are fvcking epic.

Satyricon ... My personal favorite black metal album is "Dark Medieval Times". My favorite black metal track is "Dark Medieval Times" on the Dark Medieval Times album by Satyciron. It is perfection.
I also very much enjoy their Shadowthrone and Nemesis Divina albums quite a shitload.
Frost is a fvcking awesome drummer.

Also, The band 1349, in which Frost also performs. They kick ass. The album Liberation got me hooked on their sound.

Enslaved. I love me some enslaved. Their album 'Eld' opened up the world of black metal to me. I have listened ever since.

Gorgoroth ... they've been around a while and they score big points for being consistant. Any/every album is a painful and pleasurable eargasm.

Emperor... Another magnificent example of awesomely awesome great black metal. In the Nightside Eclipse .... GREAT album.

Arcturus ... they have followed an interesting path. At the start they were crazy fvcked up black metal. Then, they continued to play crazy and fvcked up music, but worked their way over towards electronica.

Perhaps an even better example of a band that started out as fvcked up awesome black metal that changed over the years to fvcked up awesome electronica is Ulver. They are quite unique.

Ancient ... these guys are fvcking nuts ... they overdo the corpsepaint and pretty much hit every black metal stereotype, and they do it ohh so well!

ABIGOR. Listen to the album APOKALYPSE. I have changed my mind. THIS is my favorite black metal album. It might suck if you look at it from an analytical point of view. But, if you rate it purely for the crazy vocals and infinite aggression and batshit insanity, it is absolutely phenomenal!

Listening to this album the first time back in my impressionable teenage years was sort of like the first time I tasted a habenero pepper.
