I was thinking of getting this CPU and this memory now. I'll later pick out a 7900 GT or 7950 GT.

I would like this upgrade to last me at least a year and a half. I play a lot of games but I don't need to play at 1600x1200 with all the effects on, etc. I will not overclock at all.

My rig is in my sig. Thanks.

No, you need the X2 4200+ for $185: link since for games a 3800+ isn'tmuch faster than your 3000+.

Since ZZF may never get either one back in stock, here are some choices from Newegg:

$172 - X2 4400+ OEM (needs HSF!) - link

$87 - 3700+ single-core - link

The memory looks OK to me. See my edit above for more CPU choices. For a HSF I've used a Zalman 7000b-alcu with an X2 3800+ but I don't know if it's good enough for a 4400+, someone else might have a better suggestion.

I'm on a budget so let's say I went with an A64 3800+ and added 1GB (2x 512MB) of the memory I currently have for a total of 2GB? This is the memory I have.

It would only cost me around $290 Canadian. Would it last for at least a year? Would it handle a 7900/7950 GT well?

I don't have the money right now to switch to Socket AM2.

EDIT: When I think about it, I'll mostly only play WoW. Might try out other games but I'm not expecting 1600x1200 with everything maxed. 1280x1024 is usually fine for me.

The 3800+ single is a good choice. Currently a dual-core only runs a little faster than a single-core at the same clock speed. A 3700+ or 3800+ will do well with a 7950 or 7900GTX
