I reformat other people's hard drives on a daily basis, so I know pretty much what's necessary to backup and whatnot... but I don't hardly ever have to do that to my personal computers.

With proper maintenance, Windows can work fine after an extended duration, really! :Q

I've been running this computer since March. Still going along fine. I recently formatted my win2k box (got it in 2000 as win98, upgraded [not format+install, but upgrade] in 2001, and never touched since, with normal-heavy usage)as explorer got fookered, and frankly, the only difference for me was that IE loaded faster. It wasn't night and day, it was more like finding $1 in your pocket you didn't know you had. just a teeny little bonus.

I do it about every 6 months... I have an external firewire drive I can back everything up onto, as well as a 2nd internal 80GB hd. Plus I have a DVD burner if the need would arise. I'm covered there.

In the event that I do have to reformat, though, it's easy enough for me. just format one 5gb partition.

Yeah I don't reformat that often, because I test software on a secondary machine before installing it, so I don't usually install too much software on my main one. The last time I reformatted, or actually just formatted, was when I bought my new Raptor drive in December.

I have *NEVER* reformatted. Never had a reason to - and I've been "doing" computers as a career for 15 years - online 10+ years.
