Have you tried a forum for that car? Transmissions are pretty complex areas and sometimes quite easy and worth while to fix.

They didn't charge you a dime? Even just dropping the pan is worth several liters of transmission fluid...and the mess, don't forget the mess.

yup.. not a dime.
and I asked them twice about a tranny drain and fill.

once when I dropped the car off.
and again when I was talking to them over the phone after they dropped the pan.

Yup, some places will do that figuring you're likely to come back with serious business that they can make real money on. Not only that, but you're likely to refer others there due to that type of service. Definitely a smart business strategy in my book.

I've got a guy like that, doesn't nickle and dime on stupid stuff. In between oil changes and small things for other people, he's got a 512TR on one lift, 912 getting full rebuilt on another and an e-type with random electrical issues (surprise there...) sitting to the side. Referral business is the way to go.

An old trick I've heard of to get rid of the 1-2 bang shift is to drain and fill the tranny three times with a run-in of a few stop-n-go trips in-between (to get most of the old oil out and whatever else contaminants and debris comes out with it, then change the filter and the turbine shaft speed sensor (if so equipped, as I didn't check your specific tranny for it)

Don't know if you want to try that route, but if you're planning on keeping the car for years to come, might be worth a try if it's DIY.

I had the same problem on my old clunker, also a mazda engine, the mechanic test drived it and told me that the tranny was going to die soon, he told me to keep driving it until it died and that the lucas additive would only give the tranny about a month or so of life, decided i would just get the tranny replaced before it left me stranded, it cost me $350 to get a rebuilt put in, then again this is a '91 car
