Time for a new PSU?

Phenom II X4 940
4gb Gskill DDR2 1066
Geforce 8800GTS 640mb
Geforce 7600GT, for 2nd and 3rd monitor so I can have the 8800 in 3d mode and the 7600 in 2d and be able to watch tv shows/movies while playing games
5 7200rpm hard drives of varing size and age
1 5400rpm laptop hard drive
2 DVD burners
and some fans, sound card, cpu cooler.
running windows xp 64bit.

All on a 500watt coolmax psu.

Time for an upgrade?

500W is plenty for that setup, but I'm concerned. Is your coolmax a CP-500T? If so, it's really a 400w PSU sold as a 500w, and even if thought of as a 400w it's not very good quality.


Overall, if it powers your system and it's not causing problems, Save some $$ and stick with what you got. But if any possibly PSU related problems come up, or you are unhappy with that one, it wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade.

I am having problems with my setup, and they are proving difficult to track down. Could you perhaps describe some symptoms of PSU issues so I can see if they are similar to my issues?

Or you could post your issues and I can tell you what they are ;)


Most common PSU caused issue of course would be crashes when gaming/other load

Does your power supply really have 6 pata/sata power plugs?

You're trying to do quite a lot with a single box. You'd probably get better performance if you separated your box into 2 systems: a server/downloader/browser/media center, and a gamer/production/high-power system.
