So i've had my Nokia E61 for a 7-8 months now... Excellent phone, but the size of it is getting annoying to me right now, just dosen't fit comfortably in anything I own... Also, some small gripes about it (low bluetooth volume, battery life ain't amazing, sometimes just cannot find a tower AT ALL until i power cycle, also, my voice mail indicator is off by one message all the time). As i said, nothing major, but as a new model is soon to be introduced, i want to get out while the resale price is still high... I also had hoped the Slingbox client would be available by now (it was supposed to be released months ago) but no word on even a beta version as of yet. Also, i really don't have a need for a QWERTY right now...

My requirements;

GSM Quad Band (No compromising here)
Small, Slim
Decent Interface (has Moto improved theirs since the razr?)
Good Battery Life
Good Reception
Camera (not a req', but handy to have)
Unlocked (no contracts for me right now)

Any recs?

I have the SLVR L7 and I vote against it. The Bluetooth on it is sketchy, it drops my ear piece and every once in a while it won't even connect to anything bluetooth until I cycle the power (it tells me to do this on the screen)

The ear piece that is built in is a little too quiet and so is the speaker phone.

Add in the ocassional pause when working around on the phone, this would get a 6 out of 10 from me.

If you have use for it, the Blackjack for Cingular (I know you didn't want a contract, but) and the Nokia e62 have gotten pretty good reviews from users around the world. I have a girl at work who has a Blackjack and I am waiting to see after a few months how she likes it. (I would have use for a smartphone, but dont want to carry a brick around)

Where do you buy your unlocked phones though? I would be interested in replacing my Razr, but do not know a reputable place to buy one from.

[edit] sorry, I didn't realize you already had a flat wide phone. What is wrong with your current phone? Too wide? You can look at some of the BlackBerry 7130c or their Perl phones. They are pretty compact without quite the full qwerty.

I've got the Blackjack and have had no real issues with it. My biggest gripe was the profile setup in order to change ring volumes. Having not owned a Samsung phone before I had no idea I had to set profiles.

That is a Windows Mobile thing and not a Samsung thing, I believe.

Anyway, I've got the Blackjack as well and have loved it.

No need for QWERTY? Why bother getting a smartphone at all then.

Im assuming you require the 850 band becuase you use it heavily in your area, or rather need it for your area?

For triband:

Samsung E780; thinner, sleeker, smaller than a RAZR. No uglyness from the RIZR. You'll have to find it online as it isn't made in the states.

For quad:

moto w510 maybe when it comes out?

I have the blackjack as well, and it is very sleek for a smartphone. I actually wish it didn't have a camera so it would be even smaller. Coming from a laundry list of pda phones, the blackjack is by far the most inconsipicuous.

Why do you need the 850 band? Is 1900 just horrible in your area?

Cingular is 850 only here.

So as much as I despise the interface, the RIZR and KRZR seem to fit the bill right now...

Yes. No motorola. If you buy Moto, you're a newb.

lol, b/c Sony is so much better? The W series from Sony is like the 3 series for BMW. Its able, looks nice, and is also played out like a mofo. You can't pretend to be trendy and call someone else a newb....doesn't work that way.

Get the k790a, the north american quad band version of it

I have the k800 too and i love it... but it may not fit your "slim" profile...
If you seriously need "slim" ... then i would go for the Samsung D900
- Quad BAnd
- 3.2 megapixels... Auto focus..
- Expandable memory up to 2 gbs...
- A WAAAYYY better UI than MOto...

oh yeah ... stay away from MOTO... they played that "slim" thing for too long its old.
I give them props for starting the slimming of phones... but they put the crappiest hardware in there.
Samsung on the other hand can play the slim game but has far better hardware than Moto.
SE FTW :)
