Time for a new motherboard, is it time for 64-bit?

OK, I'm about ready to plunk for the ASRock board, new PSU, I'm going to stick with the Matrox for now, and do 1GB of RAM. I am reasonably confident that will do for now, I've been living quite well on 768. And I think I will go for the X2, thinking that's the piece that should be given the 5-year view.

So if I go for 1 stick of RAM, is that a BIOS setting or how do I tell it to do single-channel? Will it recognize that there is just one stick and deal with it?

And I will noodle around for price. I have occasionally looked at PriceWatch, and always wondered about the cheapest vendors - are they reliable? Does PriceWatch only list dependable sellers?

Motherboard will recognize how many sticks are in.

Check resellerratings.com for places you get off pricewatch/pricegrabber/froogle

Well, back to it one more time - if Phy is saying there's really not much difference in single and dual-channel, why not get the 2x54 and save at least a few bucks? I know there are only 4 slots, but I really don't worry about wanting more than 4x512 down the road.

But then 5 years is a long time.

Anyway, I'm pretty close to all set, and again I thank you all. I am aware that lots of people like me come in asking pretty much the same thing - I need to do something and don't know what's the best way. You guys do a real service

The thing is that 4x512 gets you a performance hit vs 2x1024.

Not a huge deal, but that's the main reasoning behind doing 1gig now and waiting to add a seconds later.

Well, I am confused then. I found at least one site that said there is a boost for dual-channel. It sounded like 2x512 at dual rate would be better than 1x1GB at single rate. At least that's what I thought that site was saying.

The board has 4 slots, one pair one color, one pair another, so it seems the board is ready to take 2 matched pairs and run each pair in dual channel mode and that should be good or why do they build such a thing? And here in this thread some think there's a hit to using 2 versus one, and some think there's no perceivable difference. Is this a debated issue and I will find different opinions and may as well just accept that?

And sorry, but what is 1T rate - I googled for it and got a bit lost in one explanation I found.

Running a single stick gets you single channel = a little slower

Running two sticks in dual channel = ideal

Running 4 sticks in dual channel = depending on what you get, your ram may run at slower timings

Well, that would mean get a single stick of 1GB now and when I want more I end up with 2x1gb at dual mode.

I just can't see spending an extra $100 for the 2x1gb right away.

I started out 5 years back with 2x128 which was plenty then, so . . . .

and before this is all over, can I ask - whence the name YOyoYOhowsDAjello? Certainly one of the more ornate names here.

I'm old enough to remember Jell-O as a regular dessert at our house. I really am a Senior Member and I chose the icon cause it looks a bit like me

It's a dumb story.

Short version = my first choice was chosen, then I remembered seeing that message on a get well card earlier on the day I joined and I knew that wasn't going to be taken.

Yes, just put one stick in, no bios setting needed. newegg is the best, but not allways the cheapest. I go with them for ease most of the time. Monarchcomputer, zipzoomfly and mwave are OK.
