Time for a new monitor ?

Currently own a Black 19 inch NEC MultiSync FE 950 + CRT monitor. Had it for a good 5 years or more and its still working great! Should I just keep using it till it dies then buy a LCD monitor or what ? I can't sell it for that much because there not really worth selling at all. I looked and the most you will get for a 19 inch CRT now a days is maybe $50, if that. Yes I do game but it seems to be fine with gaming for now. I can even use my projector if I want to game on the biggest screen possible, just difficult to use sense my desk isn't lined up with the projector screen.

If you're happy enough with your CRT, just keep it until it dies. It doesn't seem like you really have any strong desire to get rid of it.

LCD prices keep dropping even as the screens get bigger, so you'll likely get more screen size for your money the longer you wait. (But then I don't know if mercanucaribe is right about the LCD trend to 6bit TN)

im still using my 8 year old hitachi. paid like 1200 for this when it was top of the line, and i still love it. all the lcds ive used at friends, sucked. so im scared to upgrade. it would give me alot more room, but ill just wait till it dies.

What makes LCD monitors so much better for the human eyes ?

no flicker and brighter

I have to wear glasses because I was always using my computer at work and at home. At least now my sight is not getting any worst after switching to LCD.

LCD better for your eyes? I have to STRONGLY disagree here!
LCD monitor companies are playing this marketing game with contrast ratio and therefore are making monitors that are WAYYYY to bright on the defaults. Many do not allow brightness adjustment on DVI either making it worse. You have to tune it down in software (control panel or whatever).

I had been having headaches and my eyesight was getting very bad, especially night vision. I didn't know what was causing it... too much Nintendo DS? Were my eyes dry? It took me months to realize the blazingly bright monitor was really taking a toll on my eyes. Finally adjusted it down A LOT, turned off the white default windows backgrounds for windows, etc. Now my night vision is probably 95% back to what it was after some months, but that was pretty scary.

Lesson -- BRIGHTER IS NOT BETTER! You've only got 2 eyes, take care of them.

Wow 1200. Amazing how much prices have came down just on 19 inch LCDs. I can remember when they were $700 to $900

if you're happy with your crt, then just wait until it dies. LCDs are 1) getting cheaper all the time, and 2) not actually that much better for your eyes so long as you keep a high refresh rate. Another option that I decided to pull was to get an lcd and use my old crt as a secondary monitor (dual screen rocks! there is no going back, ever).

I have to disagree on this. I had a trinitron that had a refresh of 120, my LCD is only 60. I see more flicker in games on my LCD than I ever saw on my CRT. I think it all depends on the quality of the CRT and what refresh rate you use.

I prefer LCDs for desk space. I can't imagine how little room I'd have available if I was using two CRTs instead of two LCDs like I have now.

I used to be a CRT snob, especially since I do a lot of high end photographic work, but after getting two crisp high contrast ratio, fast response time Acer AL1916's for my desktop, and after color calibrating them, there is no way I'd go back to CRT.

I agree with you, I used a 21" NEC CRT for a very long time, and eventually moved to LCD because it was so huge. My first LCD was a cheap Benq model that had very bad color, but my newer LCD's both have much better color than my old CRT. IT all matters how much you're willing to spend, you can't expect a cheap LCD to beat out a good CRT.

I don't think it is a hype. CRT monitor tends to produce more glare than LCD, and glare is a major contributor for eye strain. Your eye sight is getting bad not because of LCD, it is because of poor lighting. Turn down your brightness. Most monitor allows you to do that, even el cheapo ones. Also, everyone should know to always turn on your light when you are watching tv or using your computer. Also you should always set your frequency to the highest that is support by that monitor.

LCD's do not have flicker by nature...and the "refresh rates" are entirely different in meaning....

The flicker due to refresh occurs due to the "off time" in between refreshes of the monitor. Similar to a laser which draws pictures, the electron gun can only "draw" one pixel at a time. Therefore, the faster this is refreshed, the less flicker.

On a LCD this is not necessary. The pixels are always "on" and do not change unless a color change is necessary. Even when this happens, they can all change at once as it does not rely on a electron gun.
