Time for a new gaming mouse: MX 518 or the G5?

Since installing Windows 7, both my MX Revolution and my MX1000 bluetooth tend to "stop" working from time to time, more times than none. I don't know if its poor build quality or poor drivers from Windows 7. Since Logitech does not have proper drivers for W7 yet, I am thinking about changing to a wired mouse.

My options so far are:

Logitech G5

Logitech MX518


Which do you guys prefer?

I have the G5 Gen2 the blue one and I really like it, great mouse for the price.

I'm not sure what drivers you use, but I have logitech setpoint drivers for Vista x64 installed and they work perfectly.

What are the main differences?

IIRC, the MX518 has 2 thumb buttons while the 1st gen G5 has only one. The G5 has the weight cartridge system but it is quite minor advantage. The G5 offers 5 customizeable DPI setting (a feature I do find useful) while I'm not 100% sure the MX518 has that number/range of settings. The G5 is a laser mouse while the MX518 is optical.

I have a 1st gen G5 but I'd probably be just as happy with a MX518. But I'm not sure the MX518 offers anything over the 2nd gen G5, and for only $5 more I'd get the G5.

I thought I might feel button limited with the 1st gen G5, but I'm so used to the keyboard bindings that sometimes I have a hard time filling the single thumb button. I do wish I could bind the left and right tilt wheel functions. I've tried keyboard emulation and other settings in SetPoint but have yet to get it to work in games.

I have had both and prefer the MX518. I hate the mouse wheel on the G5, it tends to move sideways when I don't want it to and doesn't feel as rigid as I would like. The MX518 has no side scroll but I never used it on the G5. I found the weight thing on the G5 to be useless. I'm also not a fan of the braided USB cable because it snags on the edge of my mousepad or on my desk.

I have owned a G9, G5, MX518, and Deathadder but I prefer the IME 3.0 with the IMO 1.1 being a close second. Deathadder would have been perfect for me were it not for the rubber coating. Sold the G9 and G5, gave the Deathadder to my brother, and I'm keeping the MX518 for when I get a 1920x1200 display.

What "I" would do in your case is try to find a cheaper MX518, I got the red one from someone here on the forums for $25 shipped. Otherwise, if what I said about the G5 doesn't bug you, it is an awesome mouse, you can't go wrong with it.

No, but I hear that at lower sensitivities and at high speeds laser mice tend to screw up. I don't play at really low sensitivities so I wouldn't be able to say.

I'm honestly not a fan of laser. The laser is too powerful and when I pick up the mouse and move it while playing an fps it still picks up the movement and causes me to move the opposite direction and mess everything up. I went back to my MX510 precisely because of this.

I've had my logitech mouse for about five years I think. Still looks exactly the same and performs the same. Talk about great build quality.

I think it's MX510. If it does break one day, I'll just get the same one (or the newest version of it)

I've owned both... it's a toss up. If you have small hands, they're both too big, however.

My G5 is perfect, it has adjustable weights, some grippy shit on the top, 5 DPI settings and a braided cord which is less stiff than typical mouse cords.

I went from a 518 to a G5(gift) I like the G5 better, but honestly from an avid gamer there isn't much of a difference. I can say that the surface of the G5 is better because the MX518's surface was smooth and there would be somekind of salt or skin(God knows...) build up after long term usage... it was very minimal, but I very much like the G5 texture better. DPI... whatever. It is faster, but the MX518 is a GREAT mouse... if price is not that big of a deal the G5 is about as perfect as I think a mouse can be... shape, buttons, etc. HIGHLY recommend both. Hope this helps.

I just replaced my G5 with a G9, and I could not be happier. Not that the G5 was bad by any means, the G9 is just much nicer IMO.

$49.99 right now at best buy too.

get the Razer Deathadder. It is the only modern mouse worth getting over the mx518 and Intelli 3.0. I used to swear by Logitech but recently switched to the Deathadder after using all of the other mice mentioned in this thread and this blows them out of the water.

G5.

It doesn't crap out like every single MX518 i've owned has.

Something in the cord has broken on like 6 MX518s i have; the braided cord seems to be more durable on my G5.

That said, the middle click on the G5 is far inferior to the MX518; i agree.
