<< Russert was the first to be approached about taking over the CBS chair, according to a top network source who asked not to be identified.

It is not known Russert's level of interest.

SEARCH IS ON

"This is going to be a very difficult transition, even harder than finding a replacement for [Walter] Cronkite, which of course ended up being Dan," a well-placed insider told the DRUDGE REPORT. "The problem is, quite frankly, there's not a giant talent pool right now to find a network leader."

Outside of Russert, executives fear no one currently in television news has enough star power to sit at the helm of CBS NEWS.

Well, Russert DEFINITELY has it. I could just see him now with a little dry erase board ;)

<< Why is CBS getting rid of Dan Rather? >>

He's gettin on up there in age, he's 69 now. Tom Brokaw is 61, and I think that Brian Williams will prolly take his place in the next 9-10 years.

As much as I like Russert, I am a bit worried that he will have to change and become too vanilla if he accepts the chair.

...heh heh, Brian Williams, heir apparent

Never cared for Rather myself. Got fed up with him way back on Sundays 60 minutes. If Rather goes I may return to watching CBS news.
