Or maybe they're both shit?

Although HTC has finally said that they're coming out with video drivers for the TYTNII so maybe after those come out the Tilt won't be anywhere near as bad as it is now.

I'm going to guess this got moved in from off-topic.

Please watch your language in this forum. If there are any more posts like those above, I will take action.

They are both good. The iPhone is smaller lighter and easier to carry around and much better for watching movies and listening to music (8GB or 16GB vs. 2GB max on Tilt). The Tilt is much better for working and sending emails, and 3G is much better than EDGE if you plan on being away from WiFi, and it has a GPS, but it's heavy and nearly twice as thick and thus more annoying to carry around. If you want a portable entertainment cell phone, the iPhone. If you want to do real work, the Tilt (or a Blackberry).

Buddy has had the tilt for quite some time - still no complaints.

pm: Not to argue, however, swearing is not against the rules of AT. Just excessive abuse is.

Thanks for the reminder, Cdub. I'm new to moderating, and I'm unused to seeing swearing in the Gadgets forum. I have re-read the guidelines, and I agree with you - and I thank you again for the reminder. I would still politely request people watch their language.

The only thing that I remember hearing about the Tilt from a co-worker is the didn't like the battery life. You can go a couple of days without recharging the iPhone if you don't use it all that much, but my co-worker said his Tilt needed to be charged nightly.

i think both are very solid phones that have their strengths and weaknesses.

from a functionality standpoint, the tilt can do more than the iphone, as it has wifi, bluetooth, gps (big advantage over iphone in my book), 3g (> edge), physical qwerty keyboard (> touch screen keyboard), can copy & paste, can edit office docs, supports microSD cards, quad band, etc.

from a usability standpoint, the iphone has some advantages: bigger and higher resolutions screen (2.8 240x320 vs. 3.5" 480x32), very nice web browser (safari > internet explorer, although opera is quite nice), much nicer UI than windows mobile (other than the keyboard), slimmer, lighter and more attractive form factor.

so, i guess it's a trade off: if you just use the phone for multimedia and web browsing, or if looks/size really matter to you, the iphone is the way to go. if you want a "do-it-all" kind of smartphone and are a power user, go with the tilt.

BTW, the Tilt can take any size MicroSD card (currently 8gb max, but 12 and 16 gb cards are comming) if it has WM6 (or the drivers installed into WM5).

Somewhere I pulled up the specs and it said sometihng like "memory: microSD (2GB max)". I can't find the link now, but the official AT&T link matches what you wrote. Thanks for the correction.

With ZiPhone, it's really easy. Plug in the phone, and press the "do it all" button, wait about a minute and you are good to go.

And it's unlocked and everything? What about updating the firmware? A couple sites I saw stressed not upgrading it.

Yes, it updates the firmware to the newest and most recent (but it does downgrade the bootloader... which depending on who you talk to may or may not be a good thing... my phone had the old bootloader so for me it was a "don't care").

After that, yes, in the future, you will want to be careful about updating the firmware. Firmware upgrades from Apple often re-lock the phone (but they often don't as well... you just need to monitor gizmodo.com and tuaw.com and see what the expert guinea pigs say to do).

Since you may wonder the pros and cons of the bootloader thing... The bootloader is the BIOS of the iPhone. It is the first thing run and it decides what else gets run when you first turn on the iPhone. The original bootloader, 3.9, had several security holes that the hackers used to unlock the phone and patch firmware revisions without requiring the correct security keys for the encryption. Around Dec. 2007/Jan. 2008, Apple started shipping a new bootloader, 4.6. 4.6 is more secure and harder to bypass. But some clever people figured out a way to roll back the bootloader to 3.9 again... which is the method that ZiPhone uses. Once 3.9 is on there, the unlocking tools can do anything they want. The problem is that any phone manufactured in 2008 should have 4.6 and it's an obvious giveaway that you have hacked your phone (and violated your warranty) should you need to do a warranty return. So other hackers came up with a way to hack 4.6 to take new firmware... this is the method that iPwnage and iLiberty+ use. It's not currently very easy to upgrade a phone back to 4.6.

ZiPhone is easy and quick, but the price is a bootloader downgrade. iLiberty+ is supposed to be good, but everyone that I know used ZiPhone, so I have no experience with it.

Thanks, and I installed the software and it looks simple! I can't believe people spend the big bucks on ebay when it's this simple to do. I hope AT&T ships fast, I just ordered this afternoon.

And what are some of the best "mods" or apps to put on it? I saw a sweet pic(don't know if it was real) of the iphone that looked like a gameboy with an emulator.

Yeah, it's easy.

By the way, full credit to the guy who figured all of this out, George Hotz (geohotz)
http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

ZiPhone installs an installer that automatically gives you a list of games and other apps to choose from... it's really easy to use. The ones on the front "featured app list" are all excellent - the best are the ones with the stars.
