Tilapia Fish

Is it safe to eat farm raised Tilapia from China? Looking at all this Lead paint stuff with toys I am thinking not. Does anyone have any information/thoughts on this subject matter?

Most store bought (especially frozen) tilapia is from china from what i remember. This was at a safeway in central coast of CA that i saw that

Ever since I saw the episode of Dirty Jobs where Mike feeds the tilapia farm I've been unable to eat it at all & I wouldn't even consider eating any fish farm-raised in China.

Yes, but the vast majority of it never gets inspected at all.

I would never eat freshwater fish from China. When I lived in the country side of China as a little kid, the toilets were built on top of a pond. I remembered when I was getting ready to do my business in the toilet stall the whole pond moves cause the fish knew it's feeding time. This was many years ago and I don't know if they still build toilet on top of ponds anymore but that image was imbeded into my brain and I could never eat fishwater fish from China. Ever!

being afraid of foods from china is pretty funny. most people don't have any where 90% of their food comes from. I.e. The oranges they use to make your orange juice?

And cmon, it's not like the US hasn't had its huge share of problematic food. Spinach anyone? and mad cow disease, when the entire world, even Canada, banned all imports of American beef.

Tilapia is garbage anyway. It's the only fish I've ever eaten that has some nasty aftertaste - not just from one place, but where ever I've eaten it ( fresh/frozen ).

we have short memories. the scare was over in no more than a month or two, when we all returned to mcdonalds and started ordering burgers like crazy due to the beef famine we endured. The spinach took a bit longer, but it was no different. I don't think it'll be quite so quick for Chinese goods, since there seems to be a permanent stigma attached to imports from China here in the US-- probably since they make practically everything you buy. lol.

As I recall the tilapia farm on Dirty jobs used a feed that was like 50% tilapia poo, so this doesn't surprise me at all.

Get some quality halibut, its not very fishy and its hard to get halibut that was raised in a disgusting manner.

IMO,

Frozen Halibut > fresh tilapia

Same here. We happen to like Tilapia a lot and haven?t had any problems yet. I wasn?t aware it only came from China though. Can anyone confirm if this is a fact or not?

The chinese have no EPA. The waters there are beyond nasty. Polluted to all hell.

I actually thought most of it came from South American farms.
