Tiger Woods disses hockey

Tiger Woods, ambassador of sports (except for hockey)

By Greg Wyshynski

"I don't think anyone really watches hockey anymore." - Tiger Woods

Allow us, for a moment, to point out the subtle difference between hockey legend Wayne Gretzky and golf superstar Tiger Woods, pictured here with an even bigger icon, Diamond David Lee Roth. Gretzky was asked in a press conference back in March about Woods, and said that he never thought he'd see an athlete dominate like Michael Jordan did -- until Tiger hit his stride.

"He's the greatest athlete I've ever seen," he said. And when pressed by a cynical reporter that golfers may not exactly fit the mold of an athlete like, say, even the most physically maligned hockey player does, Gretzky rushed to the defense of an entire sport whose participants range from senior citizens on a Saturday morning in South Florida to children trying to get a ball into a clown's mouth. "You ever tried to golf? You better be a good athlete if you try to golf."

How does Tiger choose to repay that respect, during the NHL's moment in the spotlight?

"I don't think anyone really watches hockey anymore."

The full quote came from a news conference at Oakland Hills Country Club in Michigan yesterday, where Tiger appeared via satellite. He was asked his thoughts about Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals. He chuckled, and then answered:

"I don't really care," he said with an impish smile. "It's all about the Dodgers. I don't think anyone really watches hockey anymore."

What's rather amusing is that this wasn't a hard-hitting question from a Detroit sports reporter; it was a softball lobbed by Julius Mason, the PGA of America's senior director of communications. When it appeared Tiger would be less than gracious to the sport currently capturing the imagination of a place called Hockeytown, Mason tried to end the answer by saying Woods was "politically correct as always and that's what we ..." before Tiger added his candid assessment of hockey's popularity.

Not even PR flackery could curb Tiger's hunger to diss the game.

The NHL addressed his comments in a general way. Our first inclination was to label this as some clever NIKE brainwashing: Convincing one of its biggest brand names to ignore how awesome hockey really is in order to go after the NHL and Reebok. But wouldn't the EA Sports brainwashing counteract that?

Perhaps Tiger is still bitter about the demise of the All-Star Café with Gretzky.

The bottom line is that Tiger Woods downgraded a sport that's been good to him, from charity appearances at golf tournaments to fans asking about when "hockey's Tiger Woods" will arrive. As they say among champions: Act like you've been there, Tiger. You're already the guy who gets bigger headlines for not playing in a tournament than the NHL gets for playing an all-star game. No need to rub it in.

As for you, Gretzky: Time to get Tiger in the arena for a playoff game, so the puckhead conversion can begin and we can put this all behind us.

Maybe Tiger is right that Hockey is one of the less popular sports, however his comment is still ignorant. Hockey has always been one of the least popular major sports, but its always gained ground. More people watch it now then probably ever before, so what exactly does he mean by "nobody watches hockey anymore".

The only hockey worth watching is the recap on sports center. Same goes for golf. Pot, meet kettle.

Who watches golf? I'd rather watch grass grow. Oh wait, watching golf IS watching grass grow.

You're comparing worldwide vs US only. Not really fair. But the masters wins anyway even if you did US vs US. But the question is how long did those 100 million tune in for? 10 minutes? they sure didn't watch the entire thing.

Tiger really should keep his mouth shut. Or get someone to write canned responses for him.

Failing that, we'll send Sandin to crosscheck him. He's pissed off right now (not related to this) and needs an outlet. We'll see what Woods says after he comes to.

I can't stand watching golf on TV; worse than watching grass grow. I can't say I'd like to watch it in person any more, but I've never been, so who knows.

Hockey, on the other hand, I can occasionally watch short stretches of on TV and love going to the games.

According to Nielsen Ratings, only 11.9M average viewers watched this year's Masters tournament.

In contrast, 1 out of 2 tv sets in Detroit and 1 out of 3 in Pittsburgh had hockey on tv during the most recent game. Source

Seriously.. this is a big reason why I can't stand Eldrick. Everyone thinks he's this classy, soft-spoken deity that is above reproach on any issue and is flawless in every aspect of life. The man is an arrogant jerk-off, which probably comes from how competitive he is but that's no excuse. He should have kept his mouth shut like he always does or said something a little more dignified. It's not even about him being right or wrong about the NHL, the greatest hockey player ever made a flattering comment about Eldrick and all he does in return is throw dirt on the man's sport. In addition, regardless of its popularity hockey is a tougher, faster, more enduring test of a man's skill and physicality then Golf EVER will be.

I don't watch hockey a lot, only in the Olympic. I only watch golf by accident, like uh it's the Golf Channel, need to change channel ASAP.

I think nearly very sports caster/writer has made fun of the slow demise of Hockey. I see nothing different in Tiger's comments.

I've never been a fan of soccer on ice with sticks. To each his own, I guess.

Personal unbased guess on how hockey originated.

Two Canadians sitting around:

"Hey Howard, you want to play some soccer, eh?"
"We can't. Damn field is covered in snow, you know?"
"Well the lake is froze solid. It'd make a good surface doncha know?"
"We could put on ice skates, eh?"
"You betcha. But then we can't kick the ball with skates on."
"True. We could hit the dern thing with a stick, eh?"
"That just might work. But a soccer ball is kinda big, you know?"
"What if we hit around this can of Copenhagen instead?"
"Good thinking! But a soccer net is awful big to hit that little tin into, eh?"
"We'll just make a smaller net, you betcha!"
"What if the goalie gets hit with that Copenhagen can? That would hurt, you know."
"Then he can wear a buncha padding an' a mask!"

What do specific markets have to do with overall ratings?

If the master scored 11.9M average, what did the Hockey Playoff score. Compare those two numbers, then we can talk.

That being said, I'll take golf over hockey any day.

Everyone holds Tiger to a different standard and he can't make comments like that -- it's forbidden. How dare he talk about a sport that is less popular than Golf (hell, that's a pretty remarkable feat right there ;) ).

Golf has a much wider appeal throughout the U.S. You can find Golf courses all over the country and taking some clients out to play a few holes of Golf has a much greater appeal then suiting up and hitting the ice for MOST Americans.
