I quote tkim in his question :"i've tried the ms shutdown patch and still no luck. any suggestions? anyone else have this problem"[

i know i'm just posting to myself at this point but... itdidn't wotk...still the same "windows is shutting down" and it freezes. arggggg!!!!! what to do!!!

Did this happen ever since youve bought the computer or after using it for a while? Did you install any software? Win98se likes to do that (I've seen it happening at several computers at work) especially when a certain software gets installed. If it's ok, reformat and reinstall win98se.

First, Tigerdirect.com.......blahhhh. I just bought from there and will never do it again. If you are interested in my problem with them, email me and I will send you my 1 page letter to the editor.

Now to you problem...This happens on my win98se machine too. is this a fresh install of windows? I find that this happens quite often to installs that have been around awhile and have had lots of drivers installed. One way I have found around it is to "restart in msdos mode" and shut down from there. not exactly a perfect solution, but it works.

tkim, have you followed ALL of the steps in the MS articles ?? The shutdown patch fixxes some issues, but the last time I looked at the article there was a long list of things to do to determine problems.

it is a fresh install. tried it all. i mean everything in the ms article. ADAMK47: how do i find out if the driver has those mentioned numbers??? thanks to all!! thanks bacillus!

why all this drama over petty things such as this? If it doesn't auto shutdown, just press the power button?

tkim, for driver version, start/run & type dxdiag.exe. look under display to see driver version. 🙂
I wonder if you may need the Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package though this usually presents itself with scandisk at startup. read up about it here & decide for yourself.

well to power down i have to press and hold the button. its not that bad but a system is suppose to work *PERFECT* would you settle for second best? =(

i give up. time for a newe mobo and ram. thanks for everything guys...u've been a big help!

Dude, don't go out and spend cash simply because Windows doesn't want to shut down! Try this, I don't think anybody's suggested it yet:

Start -> Run -> Type "msconfig.exe" -> Click the advanced tab -> Put a check mark to "disable fast shutdown".

I'm not sure of whether this'll work or not. I've heard people recommend it to other people who've had the same problem. If that doesn't work, try formatting (back up your stuff first) and doing a clean install of Windows.

Best of luck to you. Don't give up!

AmazonRasta, he's already applied the ms shutdown patch so that option is not now available.
the paragraph below is copied from the MS KB article about the patch :

NOTE: When you apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement, which addresses shutdown issues, the Disable Fast Shutdown option is no longer listed on the Advanced tab in Msconfig.

thanks amazonrasta but bacillus is right. i tried your suggestion at first but it didn't work so i tried the patch. the patch get rid of that option under the advanced tab. thanks anyways! bacillus...you're damn knowledgeable!
