I heard that if you don't register your car with a university, and are ticketed for a non-moving violation (regardless of whether you attend the university or not) in said university's parking lot, you don't have to pay?

Just something I heard, can anyone confirm this before I amass a trunkload of tickets in an attempt to beat the man?

I can confirm this. Went to my brother's university for a night of partying (I go to a different school 40 miles away). Woke up and found a university ticket on my car, which I promptly crumpled up and threw away. Never heard a thing since.

However, the bad thing nowadays is that universities will put a boot on your car if you have enough unpaid tickets, regardless of whether the car is registered to a student or not. I hope you have a few extra license plates handy.

yes, these are grad students or 4th-years who have this job.

another thing I might add: roomate from last year acquired 200+ parking tickets for "not giving a sh1t about where i park from now on" and they put a hold on his final grades until it was paid. he couldn't register for classes until he paid the fine. but again, he registered his car...so hmmmmm :contemplating the freedom i could have by not registering;

This is true but after your fifth ticket they will probably tow at your expense. So if you need to park there regularly it may be cheaper to get the parking permit. IF you just go there to visit friends once in a while, or are planning on selling your car soon, then don't bother.

Yep, tow or put a boot on it. My bet is on the latter, simply because the university will get all their fines paid + boot removal fee, whereas towing would get them a smaller cut of the total towing fee.

Parking tickets are big business in college towns, for both the school and the town.
