Ti4400 --> 9800pro 2d quality

More importantly, what brand of GF4Ti? I've read that Leadtek had really good signal quality.

I had a Leadtek ti4400; now I have a Sapphire 9800pro. Before I basically couldn't run 1600x1200 because the text was too blurry, now it looks fine. Not that I actually will run my desktop at 1600x1200, but it gives you an idea of how much better it is. I always figured the claim that ATI has better 2d quality was just something made by people out to slam nvidia, but it's true.

I?ve got 2 Sapphire cards 7500 -- RIP 😀 , and a 9100 (64bit ?ug). They both have excellent 2D. The 9100 was slower than it should have been because of the 64bit bus but things sure looked good while going slow.

I?ve read several comments by people who said if you want the best 2D get a retail ATI. Sapphire manufactures for ATI so it?s possible they spec their cards the same as the BB ATI. I just bought a retail ATI 9600XT -- free HL2 😎. It has the highest 2D rating at Viperlair so far and it?s maybe slightly better than my Sapphire 9100 although I?m hard pressed to tell the difference. Sapphire seems to be doing a good job in the quality department.

That's surprising, Cubic. I remember FS kicked up a fuss way back when by declaring a Leadtek GF4 had better signal quality than a Matrox card.

Anyway, enjoy the new card.

the radeon 8500 i used to have had noticeably better 2d quality than my gf3 or gf4

not enough for me to care about, but i could tell the difference.

I have a Leadtek 4200, and i can definitely see the difference between my 9800 and it (9800 is better).

You're comparing a high end card to a low end mid range card (when it was new), so it doesn't surprise me. To be honest, I couldn't really tell when I did the same upgrade. I assume everything is faster, but I also upgraded the CPU right before the 9800Pro so its hard to say. If I spent more than the $129 the 9800Pro cost I'd probably send it back.

Edit: Not because I care for one chip or the other, but NV has better linux/freebsd support. In the games I play (Q3 based), there is no real difference between the two.

Same was also true for my Sapphire 9500 PRO, it having better 2d quality than my Albatron TI4200. I can't tell any difference in 2d between the 9800 Pro and 9500 pro (b/c of same vga filters and RAMDACs).

I got an entirely different opinion on this. For me nVidia is better as far as 2D is concerned. I had an ATI Original Radeon 7000 and after I bought an analog LCD (Samsung 17 inch) I couldn't get a clear picture no matter what adjustments I made. That's why I swapped the 7K for another ATI Original Radeon 32MB DDR - no luck. The picture was better, but still just not there. Got rid of it and got an MSI GF 4 MX instead. I couldn't believe my eyes! I always thought nVidia had a crappy 2D but in my case that MSI card produced crystal clear, precise output with which my LCD worked just fine, unlike with an ATI.
Of course, that card is crap as far as performance is concerned, but it's 2D is better (for me) than any built by ATI or Sapphire card. I fear what will happen when I'll be upgrading the card for a Doom 3. Probably will have to get another MSI to be hopefully as lucky.
