Ti4200,XP,DX9,Asus A7V8X-X,which detonators?

As you can see from my sig.(Dragon1 system), I'm a little behind the times as far as detonator drivers go. But I may be helping someone reassemble a system with the only thing new as the MB, so don't pay any attention to my sig beyond that. His parts are about one year old and I need to know the best detonators for his system (all stock speeds and no overclocking ever):

Windows XP Home Edition
Athlon Barton 2500+ CPU
Thermaltake Volcano 11+ Xaser Edition HS/fan
Asus A7V8X-X (new)
2x512MB of Crucial PC2700 RAM
Chaintech GeForce4 Ti4200
SB Audigy2 OEM
on-board LAN
...etc.

I believe last year he started out and stuck with the 44.03s or the 44.71s with the Biostar M7VIT Pro MB (WinXP also) and it seemed to work fine. He will probably not be upgrading for a year or two. I was just curious what would be best. Should he install the latest DirectX9c for the newer and upcoming games or is DX9b or even DX8.1 OK for now? And then, of course, in combination with what detonators? Thanks for any help!

I had a G4 Ti4200 in my rig till earlier this year. I liked the ones from May 2003 IIRC. Seemed to me the newer driver's objective was to remedy probs in the FX line.

I wouldn't think DX9.0c w/b neccesary yet. When it is, the "new game" will install it for you.

There are many, many reasons for not wanting the latest of everything. In fact, too many to mention here. I was just wondering what people in this forum thought. This thread might have a few:

Went there, didn't see any reasons there.

The latest drivers give you bugfixes - forget about that 5% performance gain. Most of the bugchecks (bluescreen memory dumps) I've gotten via e-mail from people on here are due to outright bad or at least very questionable drivers. Updating to the latest drivers will fix issues and ease maintenance now and down the road.

I'm sure there may be some out-of-the-way exceptions to this, but generally speaking, you want the latest and greatest drivers on the box.

DX9c hasn't been tested enough for me I think. This install will most likely happen tomorrow and I think I'm going to tell him to go with the 56.72s and DX9b.

Just thought I'd let people know that his Ti4200 is fried and he ordered and received a 9600XT. I gave him DX9b and the 4.7s. Everything is installed and working great!
