Hi, newbi here..

I'm just curious, I've seen a lot of posts about Radeon instability in WinXP with an Athlon XP.. For some reason people with an Athlon TB don't seem to have problems.. (i'm gonna go for Athlon XP, so.. please prove my statement wrong)

I haven't found any Benchmarks of Ti200 vs. Radeon 8500..

I'm a heavy gamer, Quake3, but i also play other games.. My preference goes to speed instead of image quality.
I just don't know what Videocard to choose..

Maybe it's relevant to say that i'm not a tweaker, i will use the card as i get it (i usually don't even upgrade drivers cause of bad internet..)

any suggestions?? (Maybe if there are benchmarks that i've missed?? URL?)

tnx, in advance

Check Anand tech site for reveiw of the 8500 which shows a complete comparison.

And welcome to the forums!!

And if you're a heavy gammer, you best start overclocking. It's free speed for your games.

Well...

Here's a review that'll be closer to your system specs:
http://www.rivastation.com/r8500_1_e.htm

I think this is one of the Retail Radeons (275/275Mhz). The cheaper OEM (250/250Mhz) cards won't scrore as high.

I'd say the best choice seems to be the GF3 Ti200 right now. It's less expensive than the 8500 and the two are close in performance (comparing the OEM 8500). Some people are able to overclock their Ti 200's pretty high, so that they are faster than the original GF3.

If you don't care about $$s, the retail 8500 is pretty fast in Q3. Note that some DX7 games (like UT) do poorly on the 8500.
Good Luck!

Then go for the Ti200. Faster than the 8500 and still around the same price (cheaper, actually...)

Well, you better start now overclocking; like Killrose said, free speed for your games. As for drivers, then definitely nVidia. ATi has been having some trouble getting drivers up to par. NVidia is much better in the driver department. But, if you don't want to OC, that's fine. The Ti200 has enough speed anyways to please you, and is faster than the 8500 even w/o tweaking.

Probably the works of Quack (or whatver they call it).

Don't worry about it, ATi is just trying to cheat. :disgust:

Garra - it depends on the OS and cpu as to which card wins in Q3. But ATI did games specific optimizations for Q3, hence it good performance in that game. So, this is good new for Q3A Players.

AunixP35, yeah, ATI will probably lose me as a customer. Partly due to the recent deceptive practices, but mostly due to the fact that they have once again released lame drivers. I won't be buying for about two months, so if they get their act together, maybe I'll change my mind.
