TI-89 on the SAT

yep. any graphing calc that doesnt have a qwerty keyboard. in other words, pretty much everything besides the TI-92 and other choice exceptions...

thanks guys... im a bit worried about the test, and the 89 is like a security blanket..... nothing like having a motorola powerpc to keep you feeling happy 😉

off to bed, hope i do well!!!

thanks again..

you can use it.

GOOD LUCK!! I hope you do well 🙂 just remember.. if you have extra time at the end of a section, don't sit back and look smug, go back and verify your answers!!

Are you guys SURE that he can use it? When I took it just a few years ago, we weren't allowed to use anything better than a plain old scientific calculator.

Ive been using an 83 plus all the time, but i do see half the people there with the 89, mabey ur procotr was an idiot.?

when i took the ACT in nov 2000, the ti-89 was NOT allowed because of its computer algebra system (CAS)

When I took the ACT last April, we were told that we were NOT allowed to use a TI-89 or 92. That PISSED me off! I LOVE my 89.

Because of that rule, I spent more $$ to buy an 83+ that I only use on the ACT or SAT. The rest of the year, the danged thing sits and collects dust. The 89 is just soo much easier to use than the 83. I guess they don't like how the 89 can solve complex fractions and stuff, eh?

im positive you can use it, however its not gonna give you any advantage over any other calculator (unless your taking the SAT II math2c), the SAT I math section, is specifically designed to test your math abliites up to algebra (breifly touching on geometry). If you have a good foundation of algebra and are able to logically think through mathematics, you will do fine. I took the test numerous times and the lowest i ever got on SAT I math was a 740, ended up with a 790 though - although i double checked every answer and dont remember missing one - im sure that it was some stupid mistake, like not reading the questino right and giving X, instead of X+4. ETS tends to do that alot of the sats, they will give you some problem like (for the sake of making a point i will give an easy question) like X/4=16, and tell you to give 2X, however tons of people dont read the quesion right and give X because they feel panicked for time.

So my advice to you, stop worrying about which calculator to use, and concentrate, go slow enough to understand each question, but fast enough to finsih the secton within the time limit. I eneded each math section with usually 15 + minutes to spare, so you have plenty of time.

Now verbal... that is another thing....

Yeah same for me. I did great on math, verbal sucks. That was earlier this year, I'm taking it again tomarrow.

Yes, you can. It provides the advantage of seeing your work entered as you would normally see it, so you can double check for entry errors. But it doesn't give you a huge advantage like it does in math classes. Differentiating and integrating become so easy to check with one🙂

Just take the 89 apart and switch cases with an 83. I've looked at them thinking about this before and it looks like it may work. You're screwed if you get caught.

<< and the 89 is like a security blanket..... nothing like having a motorola powerpc to keep you feeling happy >>

What a crock.....I disagree with even being able to use a calculator during the exam.

Why, so people can't finish sections because they have to do all the trivial math they know how to do but takes to long without a calculator? People use calculators every day on tests, in class. What should the SAT matter?

So what's your suggestion? A slide rule and some scratch paper? I can do math without a calc, except it's a real PITA to long divide, get square roots, etc, without a graphing calculator. All a calculator does is save time.

fyi, i just got back from the test, and the 89 was a go. no problem whatsoever, they dont care. the reason that i like the 89 more than my 83 is that i can see my work, as previously alluded to...

The math section was much harder than the math on the PSAT, however the verbal was cake!!! You all just need a bigger vocabulary!!! LOL 😉

Thanks again ya'all!

I took it today, without any calculator.

Kinda forgot it at home. Oh well. I got an 800 in January. I just "challenged" myself today 😀.
You're right. The math was more challenging than normal. There were at least 3 answers I caught and switched right before time was called. Hope I didn't miss one. Verbal was a little easier. The only reason I took it again was because of the 620 I got last time. Looking for 700 today. Not sure I got it.

Glad the 89 was a go. I could have told you that from the start. Hope your scores are good.
