This is only my 2nd post so go easy... :)
This seems like a very good deal from what I have seen, ordered one after talking to 2 different staples people.

Staples has it for 154.99 here

pricematch it here for $129.99. For some reason they have a picture of a TI-83 but the info is correct and they are talking about the TI-89.

and use the 25 off 100 coupon floating around at techbargains

staples has free shipping on 50$ + orders, so it should be
$104.99 shipped!

I have a TI 82 I think and was wondering if you knew what are some of the advantages of this higher model? Is it color or anything? I am an engineering student and I think I need a better calculator especially one with equation solver.

I don't know all the technical specs, but the TI-89 can graph 3d graphs and play better games.

TI 89 basically solves the Equations for you..

That's why on tests they dont usualy allow the 89 since all you gotta do is punch in the numbers.....

Also games are awesome on it. =)

Im a ti-86 owner.

best of all TI89 has Mathmatica, which can calculate integrals and dirivatives. VERY helpful in Calculus 2 & 3

Actually, the TI-82 is better in some cases. I can't remember exactly how it was, but I remember from HS that the 82 has more RAM but is slower, while the 89 has more functionality and is faster, but less RAM. Or was it the other way around?

I just remember the 89 couldnt play a couple games because it couldnt handle them, but my 82 worked with everything... :)

TI-89 is Top of the line for Texas instruments.. Very powerful calucator..
If you want to go Ph. D get HP 49G like I got, but for college and high school and grad. schools, ti-89 is unbeatable...
$109 is great deal for it..
There is also, a ti-92 model, that one is awkward and horizontal, bigger screen though..
For those having problems playing games on it, get geforce 4 for TI, change resolution to 2024x2024 and play off..
Regards..

Yeah, the TI-89 features Advanced Mathematics Software, so it does do derivatives and integrals, even down to point of inflection as long as you got the bounds right. As far as I know, they are allowed on SATs and SAT2s, but are banned from ACTs. If you want to compare the TI89 to TI92, the 92 has a bigger screen and lower resolution. The 89 has a smaller screen, but higher resolution. They use the same mathematics software, with the exception of the 89 NOT having geometry software, but it can be purchased separately. It's called Cabri something... The 89 does have "Better" games, but they have more of a chance of freezing your calculator because the 89 has native support for basic and assembly programming languages, but asm only through shells. Personally, the 89 helped me a lot in calculus, but don't have it do everything for you, because you will be handicapped like me, having it solve limits for you. hehe.

BTW, the HP49G is pretty nifty as it actually shows you HOW TO GET THE ANSWER.... I wish I woulda bought that... oh man!

I have an 89 and it is allowed on most standardized tests. My college allows them, and the SAT allows them too. The TI-92 is the one that is banned, mainly because of it's qwerty keyboard. The 89 and 92 are the same on the inside though.

The 89 rocks, I have one and unfortunately paid $150 for it. It'll solve equations for you, find derivatives, integrals, and zeroes. It is very helpful in saving you time in any class. I highly recommend one. I wish I had this calculator in high school. :)

For engineering students it's wonderful!! Most of the engineers here at UM have them (or the TI-86).

89 can do like almost anything. It is the calculator lol. I have it, but I only know how to do a few things. I cant figure it out, and who wants to read like a 500 page book? I got mine for free anyway, my friend didn't want it. But the calculator rocks. Especially tetris.

Phenomenal calculator, I recently purchased on for 150 bucks and i cant say i regret spending a penny of it. Takes integrals, takes derivatives, You can get programs on it for mechanical engineers that will calculate shear force im point supported beams, and that will help you through all sorts of thermoscience stuff and fluid mechanics. It does matrix, and can perform standard matrix operations. The solve key is amazing. Not only that, if you take physics, it has a table of numerous valuable constants, and it gives them in the correct units, IE H=plancks constant = 6.626x10^-34 kg m^2/S.
then theres the benefits of the interface itself over the old style ala ti 83. The calculator displays information in rows, and you can use a cursor to scroll through your previous 30 calculations. Also, It expresses whatever it can in accurate fractions as opposed to decimal approximations.

Whew
Go buy one,
Ill never go back to anything else

I owe A's in Calculus to the TI-89. If I wasn't able to check my answers, i'd damn well have done pretty bad.

Though most people say it's hard to use, if you're familiar with any CLUI (DOS, bash, etc.) you won't have a problem. Also, if you go into CATALOG, and select a command, the bottom left-hand corner displays a little explanation of that command.

I would love to get one at this price, but my instructor doesn't allow us to use it on the exams :(

I agree, the TI-89 is one hell of a game..err calculator. I'm the only one in class with one. I think there are 2 86's or 85's..and the rest are lower levels. Supposedly, the 86? was all I needed through Calc 3, but I fell in love with the 89, The resolution alone is worth the extra cost. Add in the 3d rendering and the extra memory and it is Awesome..I got mine refurbed on Egay w/ a link cable for bout 120 shipped. I've had it for a year and love it.
