Let the flames begin.

You do realize that the voyager is IDENTICAL to the 92+ and 89, except the redesigned casing( and external things like key placement) right? The same programs run on both. I think the only differance is a bit of an increase in memory.

The only reason that TI came out with voyager is that they wanted to change the casing to look more "hip" and its been a few years since they came out with the 92+ and 89.

Every company generally comes out with "upgrades" now and then even if there's nothing changed about it, so that people will want to "upgrade." Many times the upgrade IS an upgrade with significant changes, but this time its not.

If you search for TI-89 here: http://shopping.yahoo.com/ there are a couple of places that sell them for ~$110 and have Yahoo's "Top Service" rating.

edit: the TI-Link is also extremely easy to build yourself, only $0.40 of parts from Radio Shack and ~10min build time.

I thought the 89 wasn't allowed to be used on the SAT because it is capable of symbolic algebra? That's the reason I can't use my 92 in my college Calc I class, not because of its QWERTY keyboard.

Also, YMMV here too, but if you can pick up a secondhand 92 from local college/etc. you can order 92+ upgrade module from TI.com for $50. Got my 92 in mint condition for $60. :)

klah: The 2.5mm plug would cost well over $5 at Radio Shack. Add another $8 for the cable and $49 for a cell phone and you're looking at $62 + $29.95/mo. That's assuming you already have solder, flux, heat shrink, and iron. From start to finish, it'd take 45 min to get the parts and cell phone, then another 45 min for research and soldering.
Besides, this deal is for a USB cable. I've never tried a parallel cable but the TI serial cable I had only worked 10% of the time at best. This new USB cable works nearly 40% of the time -- a fantastic improvement! Plus, programs that used to take 35-40 minutes to transfer via serial are sent in under a second with the USB cable. I strongly advise you to toss that homemade thing and get one of these free USB jobs from either Target or Office Depot.

dancingpig: If you prefer HP's, why did you buy a TI-89 instead of HP's clone? And what's wrong with having a powerful calculator? The majority of people you know who use the 89 use it for it's impressive capability. Whether they use that capability to supplement their own skills or simply to cheat is up to them -- you're no hero for using an old-fashioned calculator. You can't bring a slingshot to a gunfight and then complain that the other guy cheated with his laser scope. And B.T.W. all graphing calculators have a notepad function, not just the 89. And yes, as devistator noted, the TI Voyage is just an 89 with a keyboard (to better facilitate those notepad entries and cosine integrals.)

AFAIK, TI89's are valid on SATI, SATII, and AP tests. However, I've heard they are NOT valid on IB tests, meaning I'm going to have to borrow a cheaper one from a friend. IB only allows up to a TI86.

And damn right $105 is a great price for this calculator. I bought mine at a 20% off Microcenter sale for $120 and thought I got a good deal. If you're a Freshman or Sophomore in high school and plan on taking classes like Pre-Calculus, Math Analysis, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, and AP tests, this is a must have.

Agreed, worms. TI89 can tell you every basic (and most others, too) integral you need to know for HS (and presumably college, though I can't say from experience) classes. I don't NEED to memorize integrals anymore. I know how to do them if I must (like on tests where we have to show work), but why waste my time?

Also, my friend tried to get in on this but, as others have stated, this is a YMMV deal and our local store had it for $150.
