Guys, I need your help. I am not much of a gamer, but I will be upgrading my card from a TI4200 soon. I would like it to have dual outs, one being DVI. My only other requirement is that it is around $200 or less. What do you recommend as the best card out there, that would fulfill my requirements?

From a ti4200? A Cheap upgrade would be a 9600 pro, which would give you a pretty good performance jump, and the card would allow you to play half life 2 at highest settings faster then a geforce fx5950 ultra. I wouldnt recomend nvidia right now as there DX9 performance is not up to par. get a 9600 pro or 9700. Either would give yo ua good increase in performance and awesome speed in Dx9.

I am not much of a gamer

Then why upgrade?

Heck, i still know people that are buying the sis305 (it's almost free!). The ti4200 is an excellent card for a mid gamer.

Maybe not at the highest settings, but the 9600s are solid cards.

your gonna be lucky if the 9600 can play it at 1024x768 w/ 1 or 2 features turned on.(in dx9 mode, not 8.1)

Maybe 45fps, maybe.

As opposed to the 5900nu, which could barely break double digits? :p

Find a 9800np somewhere, best bang for your buck. :)

^ Maybe you can say that once NVIDIA proves that they're actually increasing performance and not just degrading IQ with the new drivers. Welcome to this week.

The fact is that the 9600 Pro pretty thoroughly crushed the 5900NU in Valve's HL2 benchmarks. I'd love to see another round of them with the newest drivers, but so far that's all there is to go on regarding HL2.

They are stuck bragging about the performance of a card on a game that wont me out for almost half a year.

When its your only good leg, you have to stand on it.

What he said... No doubt.

And guys, try to keep him with an Nvidia card just so he can avoid the driver cleaner reformat headaches. If he had ATI to start with, then I would tell him to stick with ATI. A 5600 Ultra can be had for about 150 or less. The 5700U is closer to 200 but hoping it will drop soon. The 5900 is the best bang for the buck right now. I think he wants to upgrade from a Ti4200 because he needs DVI and his current card does not have it.

IMHO

For the Fifteen Quadrillionth time, HL2 is not out and will not be out until next Spring. It should not even be a factor in a purchase you make today. It's almost a law, you should not buy todays hardware for software that has not come out yet.

Because I think my card is defective. Otherwise, you are right on. My friend gave me the card when he got a 9700Pro. He was experiencing difficulties at the time he had it but wasn't sure if it was the card.

I was going to edit my previous post, but had trouble so....

The TI4200 has DVI. Problem is when I am in Return to Wolfenstien, the game freezes after a while. Otherwise the card is fine. That said, RTW is the only game I have played at all recently and even that has been for only a few times. I would like to have the option to game, but it is not my priority. I was recently given some cash to upgrade my computer for doing someone a favor. My first priority is to ditch my two huge CRTs and get a 17"-19" LCD. I want one that is capable of gaming, but I realize that none are as good as a CRT. I am thinking around $500 or so for the monitor and $200 for the card, but we shall see how the prices fall. I want to run the LCD on DVI to enhance its capabilities.

You mean one shouldn?t consider future performance in games and DX9 a factor in a purchase today? That?s ridiculous. If you don?t want to fine. But I sure will and I will advise other people too also.
