What about THX-certified movies and games. will they sound the same with a non-THX receiver?

They will sound great with either type of receiver.

You should be more worried about how they would sound on a sh!tty $300 5.1 speaker set vs a $600 5.1 set.

Drop THX from your mind. It doesn't mean that any special is on the disc...it doesn't mean that they are superior to anything non-THX all it is is something a company pay's to get certified in. This is why you usually do not see it on most high end gear, the people that buy that stuff know what they are doing and don't care about it.

Just forget about THX so you can be all smug when someone asks "hey is this THX-certified" and point and laugh at them 😀

If you're willing to go refurb on speakers, you can get some pretty nice stuff going for $600.

Naturally it would be nice if you could do some demos to see what kind of sound you like. Something that's good for one person might sound good to another.

Example of a cheap set:

JBL northridge series

EC35 (about $145 shipped)
E250 sub ($215 shipped)
E60s ($165 shipped)
E30s ($100 shipped)

That's $625 for that system. Add that to the Pioneer 515 linked to above, add some cheap speakerwire from cablesforless or elsewhere and you have a solid system for about $800.

EDIT: Just added up an equivalent system at BB for reference
Speakers/sub = $1300 before tax
Rec = $190 before tax

With tax that's over $1500 for new at Best Buy.

That is totally not true.

Most high end gear does indeed offer THX post processing. It is a nice feature to have and use on THX discs.

i might be as bold as to say that i would just go quality stereo + sub.

Something like Panasonic XR-55 (250$), Paradigm Titan ($220), a couple Dayton 12" subs.

Name the ones that do, and then list the ones that don't.

I didn't say all, I said some. Also, about half of AVS'ers do not like THX post processing, so that is not necessarily the case.

Yeah, that part is subjective.

I also agree that THX can be a marketing gimmick and means little to nothing. But my next pre/pro will have the processing.

I basically choose to ignore it just because for me its not a big enough deal. Its one of those features that I would play with once and be like...that was nice...and then never use it again. But some people really like what it does. Some people say it sounds like a rug was put over their speakers. If you like it then I would suggest it, but for someone just getting into AV gear...I really don't think it should be a priority.

Just look at it this way:

Great speakers will pretty much sound good on anything but crappy ones will sound bad no matter what you connect them to.
