I am buying a new 7.1 THX A/V receiver and I'm looking for a 7.1 system to go with it. Do I need a THX Certified speaker system for THX sound? And if I do, can anyone tell me where to get one? Right now I'm looking at the Onkyo HT530 7.1 speaker system. It doesnt say its THX certified, but will it work anyways?
 
thx is a spec that you will never achieve at such a low price point.

for the sake of your wallet, banish that term from your mind.

And those speakers are budget types but will work with that reciever.


How much do you wnat to spendon the reciever? speaks? or total?

A quality 5.1 vs a slighly lesser 7.1 set might be a better plan too.
 
THX speakers may not be worth the extra price. That certification doesn't really add anything, it just tells you the speaker system meets a minimum set of requirements.
 
Another THX speakers don't mean a goddamn thing post. You can literally pay Lucas for the right to put a THX logo on your speakers/receivers/whatever without it actually being THX certified. Hell a lot of decent equipment doesn't even bother to get the certification because they don't need it. They go by the good press of the industry magazines. You don't see Harman Kardon, NAD, Denon, Carver, Renegade, Sunfire or other audio manufacturers with the THX logo on their equipment do you?

EDIT: I will post some useful info about speakers once the OP gets around to posting his budget though.

Weird thing actually. If you look at my HK AVR 435....you can see the place on the LCD where they COULD light up THX...but it just never is....makes me wonder if they thought about getting it certified at some point and then said "Fvck it no one cares about it anyway". 😉

Im looking to spend less than $800. Right now I've picked out a $500 receiver and the previously mentioned speakers.

You should try to switch your budgets.

A $250-ish receiver and $500 speaker/sub would be a better idea than a $500 receiver with $250 7.1

I'd grab the cheapest 5.1-7.1 receiver I could and then spend the rest on speakers.

Here's the one I'd grab:

Info from Pioneer about the VSX-515K

Pioneer VSX-515K 6.1 Channel A/V Receiver with 110w/chan, DTS-ES, DD EX, DPL IIx for $175 plus 6 cents shipping

That gives you $625 to spend on speakers.

I'm on hold with ecost right now checking how much this Pioneer 815 costs....

OK. I appreciate all the advice. But will a non-THX certified system system sound the same as a certified one? And can non-THX systems upmix 5.1 to 7.1?
 
I agree, i spend $3500 (all polk audio) on my speakers and only 500 on my reciever (Lower end HK so still nice). It sounds incredible. Hih end speakers will do a better job of hiding crappy reciever then a high end reciever will of hiding vrappy speakers!

No, no speaker / receiver will sound exactly the same as another one. This doesn't mean better or worse.

At your pricepoint THX shouldn't be something you're considering.

A non THX receiver that supports DDEX should be able to give you 7.1 (mine sure did).
I haven't checked on my new receiver that happens to be THX since I went from 7.1 down to 5.1

7.1 is not a big deal over 5.1

Do you have a good room for 7.1 placement (DDEX)?
