If you stay the Duron route, go with Napalms system. It's more than enough for what you need.

Yikes!

9gigs is much more than the original 1.2gig.

I would go for a K6-2 400mhz/fan/mobo for $100, $10 graphic, $20 NIC, $30 case/power, $200 for 384megs RAM, and IDE/SCSI.

What I don't get is why do you need a monitor? If this is going to be a strictly ftp box, you dont need to touch it once you get it going. Just use one of your other monitors for its setup, and from there access it remotly.

Why are you paying the extra for PC133? Unless you plan on OCing your server (not real bright, but OK if you want to risk it, I guess...) PC100 is all you'll need.

i can get the 256megs of pc100 for 159...but i rather opt for 133 in case i use it later when i upgrade or just swap it in a different system.

only about $14 difference

Okie, just curious. Initially you sounded like cost was everything, & I figured that'd save you some money.

And I found PC100 on pricewatch for $130/256 MB.

originaly you had a 500$ budhet and now you want a 9gb/ hour I mean fot this king of throughput you probably need 150000 rps scsci drives that cost more than your total budget.

yah well here's the deal..
got about 50 people pitching in to buy this. first it was going to be $10/person, but i convinced thgem to do $20. that's why the budget changed to 850 (1000-150 for router)

At frist you were saying that it gonna be for business use, but it sound more like it gonna be a personal mp3 share server.

...Then why didn't you say so in the frist place.

I'm sure you can find retired parts among your group of 50 people to built a FTP box, with 32~64megs of ram and a few 15000rpm SCSI hdd for the task.

Lowtech -

Why may I ask are you advocating such a rediculously fast hard drive for such a simple task?

Those X15s are really meant for things like data mining, 1,000,000+ SKU databases, etc.

It sounds like he is just using it for MP3s.

Why do you feel the need to recommend such a rediculously unneeded disk subsystem and in the very same sentence, say "32-64 MB RAM?"

A 15K rpm scsi drive for a simple medium usage ftp server? That plus a scsi interface would probably come close to exceeding the price limit.
