beware that current canon's (A40/S200) have lots of focus problems. i had to sell my S200 becos of it. and canon doesn't even have any firmware upgrade for S200.

and sony has expensive propreitary batteries in P2/P7/P9/S85, so figure the cost of extra batteries in.

canon S30 and S330 look like great deals though... wich they had carried Fuji 2650/A203 and Pentax Optio's.

i think S30 takes better pics, S230 has similar design/lens as S200 & could possibly have focus trouble.

my S200 couldn't focus even in day light !

it really depends on your preference. A40 is very much a good deal coz' it has more manual capabilities.. good for a beginner into digital photography. On the other hand S200 has the advantage of being small and lighter...

Regarding picture qualities... I've found both to be quite similar, although I'm a lil' biased towards the A40 now since the above posts touched on the issues of S200...

I got my S200 from the $165 Circuit City (Best Buy receipt) deal and I've had no problems at all with it - it's been flawless from day one. I dropped in a 256MB CompactFlash card I picked up for $72, added a case I found at Microcenter for $3.88, and it's been great ever since. $240-ish for such a loaded S200 is a great deal!

I enjoy the picture quality of the S200, and the people I've given my S820 (Canon photoprinter) printouts to seem to like it also.
