Can it actually hit that speed currently since it was suppose to be optical fibre, but current ones are using copper wire. That is a huge difference in terms of transfer rate. :\

You know some dude at Moster Cable just creamed his pants as they now have yet another cable standard to sell $1000 cables based on.

Monster Cables said:
You ain't unleashed the true capability of thunderbolt if you aren't using Monster's all new Ultra Photon-Free Hyper-Resonator Thunderbolt MegaThor Cables!

They make Hercules cry for Zeus, yeah, they are just that awesome! buy NOW, limited time offer!

the really funny part is that I didn't notice the missing "n" in "monster" because I was think the exact same thing he was.

Its Mostest Cable, or was that Mostestever Cable?

Nah, just Moster Cable. The cable that has the Most of whatever a Mostest cable ever needed.

I'm a little disappointed in the announcement. But at least I can look forward to the Moster jokes to continue.

Can u expand on that . What part disappoints U. The fact its apple exclusive for a year?
Or that it will be years and years befor AMD has anything like this .

USB3 is *only* 5 Gbit/s...
Thunderbolt is 10 Gbit/s...

my question is... how many devices need more than 5 Gbit/s? and *if* you have thunderbolt will you still have USB3 on your motherboard?

because I have alot of usb stuff... if mac or intel start removeing usb ports... in favor of thunderbolt.... I know which I rather have on a motherboard.

When will we see USB4? *cough*
Will there be a thunderbolt 2 thats backwards compatible too?

Usb is 5Gbits but can only do 3Gbits . Thunderbolt is 10 Gbits bi-directional so its 2x10gbits = 20Gbits Your not looking at big picture . Read At't article or others . daisy chaining up to 6 devices is pretty big deal. Keep in mind thunderbolt is just the first incarnation of lightspeed . Its over cable thus the thunderbolt name . When intel releases it for optics it will be lightspeed.

I don't care what AMD has, I have two Sandy Bridge systems. This is a scaled down technology over what was promised and all it is is the next Firewire. This has no chance of overcoming the popularity of USB now.

It's also a space saver. You can daisy-chain multiple devices off of thunderbolt along with a display output- all in one little socket. It's too bad that they didn't put this in the MacAir.

You have PCs right. What promise was broken ? This is for Apple computers. Until its released to pcs we don't know if it will be optics on socket 2011 in 2012 or if its cable neither do you . And USB isn't nearly as impressive as thunderbolt. Intel can use both one on high end and the other on midrange. thats what I would do . Give the high end guys even more to crow about and measure e penis

I see the Lightpeak introduction on FruitCo's premier portable line of products as a sign of times, Apple becomes the premier luxury brand and vehicle for Intel with diy pcs the popolos of the computer world.

I understand the speed, but considering the propriety of it, who still even uses any form of firewire normally?

Also, Gates doesn't even run the company anymore, so technically that argument is invalid. When it comes to data ports, usually Apple loses. USB and eSATA are pretty much the mainstream forms of data ports (storage/peripherals) and they won't go away. Firewire has pretty much faded off. And honestly, I think Thunderbolt is the reason Intel won't run USB 3.0 natively. And that will really hurt them in the long run. Also, when do you even foresee Thunderbolt being on anything but a Macbook Pro?

Doesn't matter gates and his sidekick stole the ideas from Jobs. It was Apple that made USB successful. It will be apple the makes USB useless.

Horray! Now they can move the ports from outside the computer to a stupid dongle cable accessory!

this get a big meh from me, people who have a clue have been able to do point to point 10Gb/sec for ages(infiniband) for very cheap ( $140 AUD total) and you can even run SCSI over it natively.

hell you could also use the completely open standards of SPF+ and twin-ax to get a very cheap 10Gbit p-t-p connection.

its just kinda reinventing the wheel, but a slightly different color and im sure theres a royalty to go along with it.

Lightpeak is a good technology, keeps Intels fabs well fed and its another crucial piece on their "continuum" roadmap but things start getting dangerously close with FruitCo, looks like the end of the WinIntel era has already begun if Apple dictates now and Intel follows, i dont like this...

It sounds good but will probably be superceded by USB 4.0 at 50Gbps by the time acceptance becomes a notch or two below mainstream. You will motherboard ports for it long before other things take advantage of it. I hope it's not a repeat of USB 3.0.

The nice thing about USB 3.0 is the connector works with previous USB versions.

It sounds promising to dedicate a disk tower to this pipe, however. :)
