Thunderbird vs Duron

I am going to be getting a new mobo and cpu within a couple of weeks, and just wanted to know whether to spend all my budget on the 900 T'Bird, or going for the cheaper Duron and overclocking, so that i can spend some money on other bits.

If i was to get the T'Bird, i would probabably o'clock it, so I was also wondering how fast the 900 would go.

It would definitely be the better value to get the Duron and OC that. You can use the saved money to get a better video card or something like that. However, if you want a better chance of hitting 1GHz, then a TBird may be a better choice.

For info on how fast you can expect a CPU to go, check out the CPU database at overclockers.com. Of course this is only a tally of what others are reporting, but it should give you a rough idea of what to expect.

Really hit and miss with the overclockability (is that a word?) of the TBirds. Some 800 TBirds will do 1100, while some won't go past 950.

The Duron is more over-clockable, much cheaper, and a great value. Here is how my Durons have performed:

700 oem 1.85volts = 972MHz, 2.06volts = 1020MHz (modified KT7)
800 retail 1.85volts = 1026MHz, 2.06volts = 1050MHz (modified KT7)

I've also purchased pre-tested Durons - one at 900 which is a 600 that does 1GHz, and one at 1100MHz which is also a 600 and does 1100, but no more.

Getting a pre-tested Duron @ 1GHz for $69.99 (www.oczsafeshopper.com) is not such a bad deal when you consider the processing performance that this chip provides.

The TBird prices are falling quickly, so I'd get the pre-tested 1GHz Duron at $70, and wait for TBird prices to fall.

Durons are pretty much the SAME except for that cache but what program are you running, you may not see a difference.. but under heavy stress, t bird pulls a head..

Atm, it is just used mainly for Office, because i've only got a K6-233, it doesn't really do very well for games!! i've got 2 Creative VoodooII 12MB's in SLI, so my 3D gfx are OK atm.

When i get my new bits, it'll be used a lot more for games, so i want something that will hold up well for the latest releases!!

I am seriously considering the Duron from what i've read about it's o'clocking, but I'm still not sure which Duron to go for (600,700,750 or 800 - these are the ones i could get), bearing in mind the price ranges from £50 (about $70) to £100 (about $140), whereas i was gonna be spending £160 (about $230) for a T'Bird 900.

I would get the Duron, so that you will have more money to upgrade past the 900 at a later time. Everytime that I stay on the inexpensive side, I always come out ahead when I upgrade and sell the older part. The only way that I would go for the max is if I was using AutoCAD or running NT Server.

I suggest sticking with the least expensive Duron you can find.

Almost all Duron 600s will run past 900.

You won't get MUCH better with the faster more expensive Durons.

I would get the duron for now and in few months you can get the thunderbird for around same price as duron is now.
