Have any of you come across the thunderbird spacer for AMD's
Athlons? It can be seen at: http://www.3dcool.com/thunderbirdspacer.shtml It is a copper plate cut specially to fit on an Athlon to fill in the gaps between the components that are lower on the CPU and the heatsink. My question is: is it worth the $13(hence does it do a good job in efficently cooling the chip more), and is there any danger in installing one? (can it short or even wreck my cpu?) If anyone has any tips, let me know.

It doesn't do _anything_ for cooling. It's there so you dont crack your core.. and it shouldn't damage the cpu..

they have them for 9$ non conductive over at crazypc.com i plan on getting one, i mean it's 9$ and just for peace of mind i guess. do they really keep one from crushing the die? do they interefere at all with the heatsink (ie, keeping it too far from the core?).

Spacers help protect the core of the processor. There will be a little space left over between the spacer and your heatsink and that is all you need. Just make sure that the spacer is not bent and that there IS some space there or you will fry your processor. Try this Link for information and installation of a spacer. BTW, I would go with a non-conductive spacer as mentioned before. Better safe that sorry. :D

Where can a good non-conductive spacer be purchased? The ones I keep
seeing are made of copper. Also, is it wise to get a spacer? What type of damage is it protecting from?
