Thunderbird Questions

Just wondering what the contact between the thunderbird and the heatsink is...I have a feeling that there are feet on top of the thunderbird. If so what is the best fan to use? can you use thermal grease?

oh and what is the best Tbird for overclocking? 850?

My understanding is that the feet at the corners of the top of the chip are there to support the HS and are the same height as the smaller CPU core that is in the center. That way the HS will not become skewed or tilted with respect to the core so easily, and will be in full flush contact with the core at all times. That is how God meant HS's to be installed, you see.

If you use a HS, like some Alpha's, that also has its own feet on the bottom of the HS you may have to remove them (i.e., remove the feet from the HS, not the CPU) so that the HS is in contact with the core.

Read the directions that came with your HS

With my Alpha7HO I applied a very thin layer of their grease on the bottom of the whole heat sink. You certainly can do it that way, and I suspect you can apply it only to the part that will come in contact with the core as well.

The feet on the 4 corners of the TBird are actually about twice the height of the CPU core. But since it is made of a spongey substance, it compresses when you snap on the HSF. I suppose that's why AMD requires 10 pounds of pressure fromt the HSF to make sure the feet compress sufficiently to allow the HSF to sit flush on the TBird core.

i think all the tbird o/c about the same. Might as well get an 800 or 750. The 750 is only about $15 less though so maybe get an 800. The 850 is like $50 more so not worth it i'd think. Pretty much all can do 900-950 with some extra voltage and a good cooler

I have Thunderbird 800@950 1.825V using Alpha FC-PAL35 (YS Tech fan).

I recommend Alpha for this baby. This cpu gets really hot. especially when you are hitting the 1000 MHz mark.

I have an Alpha PAL6035 Heatsink with a Delta 38cfm fan. It runs at about 44*C idle and 52*C hot. The question is whether this fan should suck or blow onto the cpu.

AMD doent recomend thermal greese.Make sure the HS and fan are AMD approved or will crush the cpu.The center of the cpu is all that touch the HS.

Also-->do u have the fan blow air onto the cpu or suck air from the cpu?

It depends on what heatsink you are using. If the heatsink has a shroud (like most Alphas, maybe all), then you would get better performance by sucking. Other heatsinks should have the fans blowing.
