Thunderbird/Duron - What Type Of RAM?

Looking into getting a Duron 700 or maybe a Thunderbird and an Asus A7V motherboard. Can I still use my PC100 RAM with this combo, or do I NEED to upgrade to PC133?

You don't need to. PC100 will work perfectly as the FSB is 100Mhz (and you shouldn't change it anyway). However, you may want to purchase some PC133 if you plan to switch to some Intel offering later.

BTW, if you want to overclock a Duron, get the 600. IMO you won't get a better result if you spend more money on a faster stock Duron. Also, if you get the A7V, make sure that the store lists the A7V as having dipswitches, you won't be able to overclock your Duron so easily. An ABIT KT7 will let you overclock within the BIOS, as long as the Duron is unlocked, as with the A7V.

You aren't entirely correct, although pc100 will work fine with a kt133 board, pc133 is also fully supported. The memory can run asynchronously to the fsb without problems, which allows for a 66,100, or 133MHz memory bus.

I did not say PC133 was not supported. Also, neither the KT7 nor the A7V will let you run your memory at 66MHz.

Yucky - Thanks for the info on the memory. I was pretty sure with the AMD CPU's using 200MHz FSB's that more than likely the memory bus had to be running at 1/2. Just wanted to make sure... Next payday here I come!!!

ISH - AMD's run at 100MHZ fsb but because it perfroms operations on bothe the rising and falling clock cycle, it in theory runs at double the rate (hence why they say 200Mhz) but the memory runs asyncrously as the digger above said!

Sorry for the misunderstanding Yucky, I thought that you were implying that a kt133 board could not take advantage of pc133 memory, while an intel solution could.
