Just read the new Thunderbird & Duron Overclocking article. Really interesting but it seem like too much work for me (a not techie 😉

Hopefully, someone will make an adapter or the motherboard companies will make a solution in thier new motherboards.

has anyone actually tested tom's method with production motherboards?

While tom explains it fairly well, he shows no results at all with this technique. He only explains how he overclocked his non locked chips before.

 
Would be alot better if mobo makers would just install a Golden Finger on the motherboard so people would still have to buy a GFD and it would be so obvios to everyone that there is a GFD there so its a little less likle to be remarked systems on sale. But because of the bridges on the cpu itself its soooo easy to test a cpu and remark it and then vola no one knows.
 
Pretty handy article. Handy if you use an FIC (garbage) and both know how to use and have high-end soldering equipment required to perform this mod.

Nice to know it can be done. Did that article suggedt buying Duron/Thunder ASAP incase they modify the cpus?
 
Nice to see that it can be done, but those mods are not for the average tech geek to do. I'll be waiting for a mobo that comes with the right 'tools' in place to do this overclock, or at least something like a GFD to make things easier......
 
I protest !! the FIC is NOT garbage. The early FIC SD11's had issues which were fixed in later versions. The FIC SD11 v1.08 is probably the most sold Athlon board (several OEM's use this board). The FIC AZ11 won top honors at Computex in Taiwan. Cutting a couple a traces on a mobo and soldering a couple of pins/dips is not difficult. While not for the soldering challenged, its pretty basic stuff.
 
I agree. Easy stuff folks. If you don't think you can pull it off, don't overclock. 😉 I'm sure there will be easier ways made available though. This isn't as hard as soldering microscopic SMT resistors 😛
