Thunderbird buying...

Due to a recent revelation about my current cpu (It's crap), I want to buy a new cpu and mobo. I've got the mobo picked out in the Abit KT7A-RAID, but I'm not sure if I should go with one of the 200 DDR FSB Thunderbirds or wait a bit for the 266 DDR FSB models... I've heard that most all 200 Mhz's are able to be modded to support the 266 FSB, so is it worth the wait? If I have my information screwed up, and considering how new I am at this it probably is, please let me know.

Thank you for any help you can provide,

CK

they can all be modified. just take a look around at some of the review sites. they explain in detail how to connect the L1 bridges...

It depends on how anxious you are. I'm going to just get the 200Mhz version because the 266Mhz versions cost a lot more. Most are unlocked anyways, so in your motherboard's BIOS, you can set it to 9x multiplier and a 133Mhz system bus, which equals 1197Mhz, but you now get the 266Mhz DDR bus that ships with the 'newer' chips, which saves a truckload of money. I wrote a post about where people are getting their unlocked chips. So far, I've had one reply saying that Peach PC sells 1.2Ghz chips OEM unlocked, so that will be where I'm purchasing mine.

Good Luck!

Thank you both for your quick replies. I can't wait to upgrade... It'll be my first major upgrade and hopefully the first of many successes.

Thanks again,

I just bought mine at icompz.com. Call them up and tell you see it on price watch. I bought a 1.2G (came unlocked), KT7A-R and Fop32-1 for 478$ shipped (Fed Ex 2-day). Warranty on the chip from seller is 90days (because of that Fop23-1 combination). MB warranty is by Abit (retail MB). They have pretty good mark on resellerratings.com. Mine is running at 9.5 x 133/33 very stable under Win98SE. Good luck to you with the new system.
